What the Critics Say

"Avi's plot is engineered for maximum thrills, with twists, turns and treachery aplenty, but it's the compellingly drawn relationship between Crispin and Bear that provides the heart of this story." (Publishers Weekly)

    "6th Grade Class Review"

Crispin the Cross of Lead is an outstanding book. It's about a 13-year-old boy in England during the Middle Ages. In the beginning his mother dies and gives him a cross made of lead which proves to have special meaning. The story is filled with twists, turns and great descriptions. This book may be difficult for kids who don't understand the dialogue of the Middle Ages, yet you can learn a great deal about what life was like during that time period. You really find out about how religious everyone was in the Middle Ages. Ron Keith did such a great job reading the book I felt like I was running right along next to Crispin. I loved the book so much I'm going to read the sequel. I recommend this to anyone looking for an exciting and adventurous book.

    Story
"Why is it one big file? That makes it useless."
Would you try another book from Avi and/or Ron Keith?

I like the sound. Ron Keith reads well. The book is of course wonderful. Avi is such a good writer, but because the file is not divided into parts (Chapters would be OK, but even shorter files would be better) it is basically useless.

I never listen to the whole book in one sitting, and finding the place where I stopped the last time is painfully difficult.

Crispin is a riveting story, and the performance really enhances the experience.

What did you like best about this story?

It was great through and through, but I really loved how the first chapter and the last chapter reflect each other. It shows how well thought out this book really is!

    Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the scene where Crispin rescues Bear.

    "Could not get through it"

I was surprised as this was well reviewed. The narrator was skillful but quite affected. The story was good basic adventure but very religious. Full of heavy handed Christianity (Catholic) Lots about Lord God and sin and penance etc etc. Having just listened to the entire Bloody Jack series and enjoyed it immensely, this was not a keeper.

What about Ron Keith???s performance did you like?

The reader had a fine voice and accent, which added to the sense of fun and drama in the story.
