Penguin presents a brand-new recording of Roald Dahl's classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, read by the actor Douglas Hodge, who plays Willy Wonka in the hit musical adaptation of the book.
Charlie Bucket desperately wants to eat more than cabbage soup every day. But even more than that, he longs to see Wonka's enormous chocolate factory! Now Mr Willy Wonka, the most wondrous inventor in the world, has hidden golden tickets inside his delicious creamy chocolate bars. Only five winners can go through those great iron gates; will one of them be Charlie?
Douglas Hodge is a multi-award-winning English actor, with Olivier and Tony awards for his performance in La Cage aux Folles, and nominations for his leading roles in Cyrano de Bergerac, Guys and Dolls, and Inadmissible Evidence. In 2013 he is playing the role of Willy Wonka in Sam Mendes' musical of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

This was great for our long holiday car trip. No matter how many times the kids watch or read or listen Charlie and the chocolate factory is always a great story. Keep them quiet for a few 3 hours, adults as well!
"Charlie is a classic treat for kids"
I would consider it to be just as good, and a joy to listen to.
Danny and the Champion of the World, another classic children story from R. Dahl
I enjoyed the scene when Charlie finally got the last Chocolate bar containing the winning ticket.
When Charlie and family realised there days of being poor was about to change forever.
This book is joy to listen to, a great childrens classsic :)
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
This is one of his first books
The storyline is lovely, forget about the film, just sit back relax and close your eyes and let the narrator take you to another place
your imagination will do the rest.
"a truly wonderful book"
I love Road Dahl's books and this is one his best. slightly different to both the film's. I'm always fascinated by the interpretations of Willy wonkas mannerisms as it feels every one seems to have a different idea of how he is.
Brilliantly narrated and thoroughly enjoyed by my son and I. The imagination of RD never fails to amaze and delight.
"I AM AMAZED!"
I loved it I loved the weird ways the children left the group the narration was fantastic and the sound effects were out of this world the description was amazing and it was overall fantastic!
"excellent audio edition!"
This audio version brings the print version alive in such a way you cannot stop listening!
The aspect I liked the most about this story is the tremendous and witty criticism to modern society and parenting models that transpire from its comedy. Furthermore I was captured by Roal Dahl's creative writing style.
Douglas Hodge's ability to shift from one character to another while reading makes you enjoy this book as much as you would if you were sitting in a theater seeing a live performance. Douglas' soothing voice guides you through the story keeping just the right rhythm and pace you need to conjure up all the images Roal Dahl's unique prose offers.
This is definitely a book I could listen to in one sitting.
"Charlie And The Chocolate Factory"
Very very good for young children to listen to. I would prefer if both Charlie and the chocolate factory and the glass elevator was in the same book
"excellent as always"
Charlie and the chocolate factory has and always been one of my favorite childhood stories. It's always better if it were read to you instead of you reading it yourself.
"An excellently performed classic."
We listened to this on a long journey and my two boys (4 & 6) loved it. It's a great story and it's performed really well.
"year 3 class read"
