I enjoy this series nearly as much as the Harry Potter series and more than the Percy Jackson series. Charlie Bone is a very likeable hero and the story line is entertaining.
I found the narrators voice hard to listen to- simone jones was wonderful in the bartimeus trilogies, but his voices here sounded horrible. The men sounded like they all had colds , the women sounded like men and all of the children except the main character were high pitched and squacky. I have not been able to listen to this book with the same rapture because the narration is soo poor. Disappointing-I have beenting for this book to comeout for sometime.
Please don't let the negative comments on the narrator stop you from getting this book to enjoy. There's nothing wrong with this new narrator, in my opinion, except that he's not the first narrator (Simon Russell Beale who was WONDERFUL!) but without the comparison to him, the book is read well, with expression, clear audio, etc. etc.
Listeners who have enjoyed the first narrator for five books, may have gotten used to his voices for the characters, and his expressiveness, and Simon Jones just approaches it differently. I was initially put off by the negative comments, and almost didn't buy the books. I'm glad I got books 6 and 7 for our family, and we're enjoying them!
After listening to the previous Charlie Bone books narrated wonderfully by Simon Russell Beale, I was very disappointed to discover that this book and the one following have a new narrator. The narrator sounds rather depressing and the whole effect is a rather irritating and boring listening experience.
Be careful with this one. Audible has pulled a fast one with this book. The usual reader is Simon Russell Beale. His character interpretations I think are a better match for the book. Simon Jones is a fine actor, but I don't think that Charlie's uncle is that agitated and harassed sounding nor should Charlie sound so whiny.
Note to users: if you are used to a certain reader be sure that Audible books are using the same reader to which you are accustomed.
My 11-year old son and I have enjoyed this fast-paced series -- great light listening! Unlike previous books in the series, though, this one is read by Simon Jones. We thought he was spectacular in the Bartimaeus Trilogy and very good in the Lion Boy series but were disappointed with his reading here, particularly of younger children and the women. His falsetto just sounds too fake! We still enjoyed the book, but for a really GREAT listen, try the Bartimaeus Trilogy!
We love the Charlie Bone series. This story is equally well written but I must agree with the other reviewers on the narration. Simon Russel Beale was a perfect narrator for this series. The narration for this book was very poor. It was difficult to discern who was speaking and all the characters came across with a high-pitched whine. Truly unfortunate that the narrator was changed in the 5th book of the series. I hope that Simon Russel Beale is brought back for the next.
I have to agree completely with nin. I really really loved Simon Jones as a narrator of the bartimeus trilogy. But he is terrible here. The woman all sound like men and the children are just ridiculous. Simon Russel Beale was just perfect for this series, so why change?
