But where there's a will, there's a way, as Irene proves in the danger-fraught adventure that follows. She must defy the wiles of the wicked wind, her most formidable opponent, and overcome many obstacles before she completes her mission. Surely, this winning heroine will inspire every child to cheer her on.

Avid listener on my daily commute!
This is a lovely, inspiring tale of one small girl's dogged determination to carry out a crucial mission alone in a blizzard to help her dear, sick mother, and her stubborn refusal to give up even when all seems lost. Our 4 1/2 year old grandson loves it (now that he knows that all turns out well for heroic Irene and her sweet mama) and yours will, too. The only oddity is that instead of showing the pictures as we now (thanks to Doctor DeSoto, by William Steig) know is possible for an Audible book, this recording just has the cover art showing as it plays the story twice: once with Meryl Streep just reading the story in her brilliant Streepish way, and then a second time with the same incandescent reading only with chimes added to indicate when you (if you're holding a print copy of the book as you listen) should turn the page.
Fortunately, I WAS holding a print copy, and the youngster was game to hear the story a second time. Kids always are, when the reader is good, and Streep is unbeatable.
I'm a mom. I have drama in my life. I don't want books with the F-bomb, nor graphic violence. I read for fun and to bring my family together. I read for reducing stress levels. We have never had a television in our home and our children are now mid twenties to 19. We listen together and look for belly-wrenching laughter. So what is it like to live without a TV? Awesomely educational and inspirational. Each new book is a marvel.
The narration is lovely. Ms Streep lends a fantastic spins to the characters and gives them voices. This audio is odd in that you get the full story, then the story is REPEATED with tones each time we are to turn the page. Missing something here? So am I! Because this download doesn't have any pictures!
Call me crazy but the publishing team blew it on this one. Ms Streep can't fix this weird error. Otherwise, this is a short and cute story with a good narrator.
A beautifully read story about a young girl on a special mission for her mother. It's so well-read that even very small children can grasp and be drawn into the story. Just the reader's voice is worth listening to, a lovely story teller. So happy I decided to download this!
When Irene freed herself from the snow.
Her melodic voice, but also her incredible story-telling skills.
I would rather have Steep's voice than a million dollars. ;)
