"Tony Award-winning actress Cherry Jones delivers a superb first-person narration that brings the charming 10-year-old daughter of the Open Arms Baptist Church preacher to life....A stellar audio interpretation of a Newbery Honor book!" (AudioFile)
"DiCamillo's debut novel, a 2001 Newbery Honor Book, percolates with heartfelt emotion and eccentric Southern color as superbly performed by Tony Award-winning actress Jones....This is a top-notch treatment of an award-winning tale." (Publishers Weekly)
"Because of Winn-Dixie" is a heart warming book that leaves a wonderful feeling in your heart for a long time. The reader does an excellent job in bringing the characters to life to the point where you are able to relate to them in one way or another. I strongly recommend this book to readers of all ages.
What can you say about Cherry Jones? She is a fantastic narrator for this story. This is one of those books for which hearing it narrated is far better than reading the text yourself. Your kids will love this.
Avid reader of classics and fiction, history and well-written genre novels. Music lover and huge audiobook fan.
We originally purchased this audiobook on cassette tape when it was first published and my now grownup daughter was a child. We have gone through multiple copies and given it as a gift to all of the children in the family. Most recently my husband and I listened to it together on a car trip and laughed out loud and then were moved to tears (…okay, I was moved to tears, but he did laugh out loud during the funny parts). Not only is this a wonderful story, the narration is among the very best I have heard. Obviously Cherry Jones is a very renowned actress, but many actresses lack the talent to give a book the transcendent quality that she has given this story. I can't believe anyone could listen to it and not be drawn in to listen till it ends. The reading is so moving, and the story is both realistic and yet hopeful. One of our very favorite books and a truly exceptional narration.
The audio version of Because of Winn Dixie is so much better than any printed version could be for one reason: the soft Southern accent of the protagonist is winsome and gentle, and conveys deeply-felt emotions in a way that took me by surprise. I purchased this for my 3rd grader, but it ended up being heard by my Kindergartener, my 5th grader, and myself one Saturday morning as we folded laundry together. Once all the clothes were folded, we sat down dumbfounded at the table to head the rest, breaking only to munch on snacks. The worldview of the book is that all people matter, and all people deserve a second chance. It was not lost on my children. It needed no explanation by me.
I really love this book. I even shared it with my class and we all fell in love with it. We watched the movie too and had a Winn-Dixie party. I recommend it to all my friends - and you too. Kate DiCamillo is a great writer.
We really enjoyed listening to Winn-Dixie. Our youngest is enrolled in a reading program through school and needed an easier way to be comfortable with reading the 'big books' they are into now. This helps out a lot and is really boosting his confidence! Thanks Audible!
A lovely story for adults as well as children. Cherry Jones reads it beautifully, her accent and tone just right for the various characters.
Cherry Jones did such a great job of expressing India Opal's personality; an open-hearted, generous, lovable child.
Well, Winn-Dixie of course. I always like the dogs best. All the other characters are wonderful too. But the best thing is that, although an adult like me has read many similar stories, it has a message that you never get tired of hearing.
I am sure I will listen to this many times.
I love everything about this book! I remember reading when I was in school and now listening to it again with my class is wonderful. The characters learning with each other in a beautiful manner reflecting real life will always bring my spirits up.
I loved the ending. The ending to this book is why I decided to listen to it with my class this year. Never before or again have I read a book with an ending like this book.
My favorite had to be Opal. The way Cherry Jones works through her thoughts and feelings makes you believe you are right there in Opal's shoes.
I teared up at the end, but the happy joyful kind. Like when you learn something you thought was going to turn out awful turned out to be the best thing in your life.
I will continue to listen to this book over and over again as the years pass, sharing it with each additional class I have the pleasure of teaching.
