The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Artemis Fowl, the explosive first novel in Eoin Colfer’s best-selling Artemis Fowl series. Read by the actor Gerry O’Brien.
Twelve-year-old villain, Artemis Fowl, is the most ingenious criminal mastermind in history. His bold and daring plan is to hold a leprechaun to ransom.
But he’s taking on more than he bargained for when he kidnaps Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance Unit). For a start, leprechaun technology is more advanced than our own. Add to that the fact that Holly is a true heroine and that her senior officer Commander Root will stop at nothing to get her back and you’ve got the mother of all sieges brewing!

It rates a good joint 1st
You could really get into the story
No I listened at night to help me sleep and when I didn't want to read or watch TV
"Memories of when my children were small"
Brilliant book.As good as other series I am currently listening to. Brings back memories of when i read them to my kids when they were younger.
Holly Short- Eoin Colfer has turned traditional idea of a fairy on its head.
This is the first time i have listened to Gerry O'Brien.
Yes but it would be a spoiler for others going to listen to it.
Originally bought some of the Artemis Fowl series for my daughter when she was at Junior school. My now adult daughter told me they were available as audio books as she had been listening to them. I had to get them. The written books are brilliant and the audio book does them justice. Eoin Colpher may have meant these for children but they are just as good for an adult to read /listen too.
"Not as magical as it should have been"
Whilst I'm not the intended audience, its for a much younger reader: think they would bore of all of the fairy politics and protocols that weigh down this fantasy story
Would still buy other books of this genre, although unlikely to continue with the Artemis Fowl series
Narrator was OK, but he could have brought the story to life with more energy and enthusiasm
the idea of kidnapping a leprechaun for a ransom of a pot of gold is a fun one with lots of possibilities, but it seemed more Jason Bourne than Harry Potter
"Not only for young adults. Antiques like it too!"
A coherent plot. It is very easy, with fantasy, to make the story so extreme that it loses all plausibility. This book has a fantastic but believable plot, within its context, and the listener is never forced out of the story by an anomalous reference.
Commander Root. I found him very believable, having worked for some explosive characters like him along the way.
Foley. O'Brien got the characterisation just right, IMO.
No. The book does not have sufficient depth for emotional entanglement. As coherent and well-written as the book is, overall it is quite shallow in its plot-line and characterisations. All the characters are pretty two-dimensional.
I found the book a nice bit of light entertainment and sufficiently engaging to make me think of buying more in the series.
This is a very fun and flowing adventure that I believe can be enjoyed by a relatively large age range. I am in my twenties and found it a very enjoyable listen.
The characters are likable and I found many of the jokes and situations quite amusing.
The concept is a fun one to begin with and given the way the reader is led through not knowing what Artemis is planning this keeps the listener hooked. I found I finished it relatively quickly and would expect it to be very popular with younger listeners especially.
The fantasy aspects are well thought out and given that this is an ongoing series it begins setting up the world that the characters live in very well with enough needed for this story but not too much to clog it up or break up the books flow.
The narrator is very good, and excels when it comes to the tone of the book and timing of the witty banter.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes their fantasy stories and enjoys books with a sense of humour.
