Anne of Green Gables

L.M. Montgomery's novel introduces the world to the lovable and energetic Anne, who at the beginning of the audiobook is adopted by the Cuthbert siblings, Matthew and Marilla. The brother and sister realize that they are getting up in their years, and intend to adopt a young boy to help Matthew maintain the property. Through a mix up, however, they get Anne instead. Rather than sending her back to the orphanage, the siblings decide to keep her, and though she makes a few mistakes at the start of her stay, they come to realize how invaluable she is to their lives.

Anne, who is 11 at the time of her adoption, has never had much training in the way of social graces. There are quite a few events that take place in which the Cuthbert siblings hide their head in shame over something that Anne has said or done, but after Anne saves the life of a young girl who is very sick, the entire town comes to love her for who she really is.

Eventually, Anne grows into a mature teen and spends the majority of her time devoting herself to academics, which pays off when she is awarded a scholarship to a prestigious four-year college. A series of unfortunate events, however, force her to rethink her future plans; but Anne does not distress. Instead, she makes the most of her situation and displays a positive attitude about it all.

Characters come to life!

My mom and I have fallen in love with Anne's character! The narration in a different dialect brings the characters to life.

I loved hearing this story again!

This was as enjoyable for me this time as reading the books and watching the movies when I was a kid! Only I didn't care for the narrator, it sounded like a robot was reading to me.

Loved the story, but the narration hurt my ears.

The book was excellent, but the voice of Anne was ear-piercing. Sometimes I would have to turn it down when she was talking.

Anne hasn't changed a bit

What can you say about Anne? She's impetuous, loquacious, a little audacious! The story is a classic for a reason - as my mother defines it, it is a work of art that has withstood the test of time.

The narrator, however, I did not care for. Her girls all sound very shrill, which is jarring when Anne talks so much. Actually, her only voice I didn't dislike was Marilla and maybe Josephine Berry. I don't know whether the narrator's accent is anywhere near correct or not - if so, I had no idea PEI and the US pronounced so many words differently. If it is correct, great, I learned something! If not, it was difficult for no reason. For a child or a non-native speaker, it may be even harder.

All in all, Anne is Anne. Like she does in her life, overall she overcomes the difficulties and strides on.

Loved story, couldn't stand narration.

Beautiful story but it was extremely hard to listen to. The narrator was too quiet when doing certain characters and very loud and shrill on other characters. I finally resorted to keeping my hand on the volume button to make frequent adjustments just to get through the book.

Anne's voice!

The way she read Anne's voice was terrible. There were many mispronounced words. She pronounced the word sewing like suing! It was painful to listen to.

Great story, not so great narrator

I've always loved this story, but the narrator is so strange, she speaks like a robot most of the time... But when she does Ann's voice it's quite nice... I can't understand why that is.

Couldn't get past the first chapter

The worst narrator I have listened to. I could not get past the first chapter.

Horrible production makes it almost impossible to listen to.

The large swings in the volume makes you jump for volume control every time the main character speaks. I could not listen to it and had to buy another version.
