Editorial reviews

Beginning with Anne of Green Gables in 1908, author Lucy Maud Montgomery created a publishing enterprise as ambitious and successful as its heroine, the flame-haired and hot-tempered orphan, Anne Shirley. Performed in a mature, impeccable American English by Barbara Caruso, Anne of Avonlea is the second of six Anne novels. The present volume finds Anne at age 16, teaching school, studying with Gilbert, forming a social club, and getting into her usual trouble.

Along with the unforgettable heroine and great quirky side characters, the listener is treated to the small, peaceful Prince Edward Island in Northeastern Canada, beginning on "...an August afternoon with blue hazes scarfing the harvest slopes, little winds whispering elfishly in the poplars"...

Publisher's summary

In this charming sequel to Anne of Green Gables, the unpredictable red-headed heroine returns for more wonderful adventures. When Anne Shirley first came to the beautiful Canadian town of Avonlea, she was a mischievous, talkative orphan who captured the hearts of everyone she met. Now, a few years later, Anne is a young woman with new dreams. She has become Avonlea's schoolteacher, and ends up, among other things, reuniting two long-lost lovers, raising two orphans, and falling in love for the first time.

Barbara Caruso is excellent

The entire series is so wonderful, very engaging, nothing objectionable. And Barabara Caruso feels like a friend, her narration is the very best. I now judge all other narrators by her.

Wonderful reading

Barbara Caruso does such an amazing job at reading Anne of Avonlea. I have listened to this book several times. I wish she performed Anne of Windy Poplars and Anne of Ingleside.

Nourishment for the Imaginings of the Weary

I needed something light, whimsical, and yet deep and wholesome. This story brought back fond childhood memories, nourished my imagination, and gave me lenses to see a wearied life with new wonder.

"Old friends"

Just wonderful to follow Ann as she grows up. This is one of my favorite series of books from my childhood. It is just wonderful to get to listen to them. The recording is not new but it is still a great listen.

Magical!

Barbara Crusoe makes the Anne of Green Gables series come alive so magically that it feels as if each time I listen, I am hearing the story for the first time. Simply beautiful readings of the descriptive passages and a perfect rendering of Davy and Paul. I highly recommend!

Anne if Avonlea.

Barbra Caruso is one of the best readers I have listened to, she makes Anne live and breath. As for Anne she is a classic that I will never tire of. Sweet, innocent and Joyful. Who couldn't use more of that in life.

So sweet.

I always love all the Anne books. Barbara Caruso always does such a good job narrating. I wish she did all of them.

One thing I did notice that surprised me was that just calling Avonlea kind of just one word all smith like, she made it like Avon Lea. I’m not sure why. She never did it in any of the other books. Huh.

Anyway, I don’t mind. Beautiful story and wonderful narration.

Not the Narrator for me

Of course I love the Anne books. But this narration was not for me. Anne was read without the sweetness in her personality and Marilla was transformed into a hard, mean hillbilly. But alas, perhaps all the Anne books will never be as good as they are in my own head no matter who reads them.
