Publisher's summary

The definitive edition.

Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank’s remarkable diary has since become a world classic - a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit.

In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.

Critic reviews

"The new edition reveals a new depth to Anne's dreams, irritations, hardship, and passions....There may be no better way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II than to reread

The Diary of a Young Girl, a testament to an indestructive nobility of spirit in the face of pure evil." (Chicago Tribune)

“The single most compelling personal account of the Holocaust...remains astonishing and excruciating.” (The New York Times Book Review)

Heartbreaking

Great reading by Selma Blair. Let’s never forget this tragic story. How all the dreams and hopes of a beautiful young human being were taken away by madness and craziness. Freedom should never be taken for granted.

A Brilliant Masterpiece Diary Of A Young Girl’s Heart

I LOVE THIS DIARY: Must Audio!! WHY?
I wish I had listened to this when I was younger. It heart felt she put all her emotions into her diary like we all do. Her story is sad at the end but very well known how the war treated her family and her. I went to Amsterdam to see the Annex she was kept in. She describes it in her diary to a T. Her spirit is felt there. Looking in the room where she slept imaging the words in her book brought her diary to life. The place she had to live in was dark and the fact nature calmed her was sad for me because she couldn’t go outside. The outside grounds are beautiful. I left there finishing this wonderful diary of hers. Shattering by the thought of her being and soul ending as it did. So glad she left me something to understand what war was for children teenagers adults but most importantly to see life through her eyes. This was enough for me to think of how lucky we are to have her story.

Thank You Anna Frank your Diary lives in my heart.

Excellent Story, Stellar Narration

Selma Blair is a fantastic narrator for this classic work, bringing to life both Anne's youth and her wisdom beyond her years.

A heartbreaking story come alive

We've all read "Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank, but we've never heard the pain and fear that might have been her voice in such a way. Selma Blair puts her iconic "once a teenage, always a teenager" voice to work here and brings the natural life of a teenager alive, while breathing in the pain and fear that surrounds her hiding.

A timeless classic

Few people can articulate the ordeal of living in hiding. Even fewer can do so at the age of 15 as Anne does in her case. Her words are well beyond what I was thinking about as a teenager. All this time after the book was written I stand by the characterization of this being one of the most riveting accounts of the Holocaust. This is a must read/listen for anyone looking to know more about the life of an extraordinary young girl.
