All Moose wants to do is protect Natalie, live up to his parents' expectations, and stay out of trouble. But on Alcatraz, trouble is never very far away.

When I first saw the title of this book, I assumed it was going to be funny or quirky. However, this book was more on the serious side. I still enjoyed it a lot! This is more of a coming of age novel than a humorous book. I love the way that they portrayed his sister's Autism and how realistic they were with the way it was viewed in that time period.
Reading this book has peeked my interest in the history of Alcatraz. Even though I knew that kids lived on the island, I never thought about their every day lives there.
The narrator is great! He brings the characters to life with the voices he uses. I definitely recommend this book.
Tangential, eclectic, avid listener... favorite book is the one currently in ear.
I would guess it was written for the 12-15 group, but I enjoyed every bit of it. Believable characters, situations and challenges, placed in an exciting location. Moose, the main character, carries a lot of responsibility for his sister with autism during the 1930's on Alcatraz Island. Interesting dynamics with family, friends, rules and situation would make for great classroom or family discussions.
This is a very well written and interesting book. The main character is very likable. The narrator is easy to listen to. The sequel is great too.
My 12 year old grandson and I listened to this book together as we commuted back and forth to his day camp. It gave him a perspective of the Depression, the year I was born, and we talked about the changing world.
I like the way the author pointed out facts and fictional parts of the saga of the children of Alcatraz.
My grandson wants to listen to more stories of life on Alcatraz, I have two more books for driving around this summer.
Definitely a kids book but this Grandma enjoyed it too!
Yes, because the characters are so relatable, and the story is intertwined with real facts about Alcatraz Island and the prisoners that were there.
Moose Flanagan is my favorite character because he is a brave young boy who is trying to just be a normal kid in a very unusual place with a very unusual sister.
The way that he changes his voice to accommodate each character really brings the story alive. You can hear each person's feelings come out as he narrates the story.
When Natalie wants to go outside to see 105 and Moose finally yells at her about how she has caused their family to suffer. When she throws a fit, you can really feel his frustration of keeping her quiet so the neighbors won't hear.
I really enjoyed the relationship Moose had with his sister with Autism.
I love books about history and thrillers/suspense.
I acquired this book because I wanted to add some more middle school books to my classroom. The story was fabulous and I ended up designing a unit around it. I am eager to get to the other books in the series.
I enjoyed this book immensely! By turns, funny, sad, and exciting. Historical grounding adds an interesting layer to the plot.
Our family listened to this book while taking a road trip to San Francisco where we actually visited Alcatraz and got to meet a former inmate (he signed a baseball for my son). My wife, two boys (ages 8 and 15) and I really enjoyed the story and performance. We had not expected the story of Natalie which really touched us. We are definitely planning to get the sequels!
I would listen to this story again, even though it is a book written for young adults. Anyone who know an autistic person will find this story interesting and you find yourself routing for Moose and his sister.
One of the most memorable moments was when Moose was in charge of calming his sister down.
Kirby did a great job, and found his choice of voices very interesting.
Yes. Although i didn't listen to it all at once, i found it hard to put it down and listened to it in 3 parts.
I am planning on having my 10 year old son read the book.
