While her mother is in the hospital coping with agoraphobia, Cosy Walker copes with living in a foster home. Luckily, her foster parents are atypically (for most fiction) nurturing and kind-hearted. Jemma and Jade, two sisters also in foster care, are rougher than she is used to, but end up liking Cosy in spite of her being a "posh" speaker. One more change in her life is her new high school, where she has a scholarship and must succeed. Math will be her downfall, and she despairs. Then, one unhappy night, she sees a "ghost" girl from World War II in her room, writing in her journal. Though the two see each other, they never communicate. Nevertheless, the "ghostly" Kathleen manages to help Cosy.
