John and his brother, Tom, got Mouse as a puppy when they were just little themselves, and they very quickly discovered that they could understand everything Mouse said, and she could do the same. After all, she's just a person like everyone else, though maybe a bit cleverer than most.
But this story starts when Tom becomes ill, and the doctors say they have to send Mouse away for fear of infection. Of course, the boys know they have to do something. At the pound, Mouse will die, and without Mouse, Tom will never recover.
So John's journey begins, but what starts as a trip to find a temporary home for Mouse turns out to be nothing like they've planned.
From the author of Fish comes the tale of a boy, his dog, their unforgettable journey to save a life, and the many hearts they touch along the way.
