Publisher's Summary

Dear Customer,

If you have not heard anything about the Baudelaire orphans, then before you listen to even one sentence you should know this: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are kindhearted and quick-witted, but their lives, I'm sorry to say, are filled with bad luck and misery. All of the stories about these three children are unhappy and wretched, and this one may be the worst of them all.

If you haven't got the stomach for a story that includes a hurricane, a signalling device, hungry leeches, cold cucumber soup, a horrible villain, and a doll named Pretty Penny, then this audiobook will probably fill you with despair.

I will continue to record these tragic tales, for that is what I do. You, however, should decide for yourself whether you can possibly bear the responsibility of exposing others to this miserable story.

With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket

What the Critics Say

"Snicket's narration is surprisingly good; his narrator voice has just the right neutral tone, rising and falling in pitch with each plot twist." (AudioFile)

    "Amazing"

The things children can go through and survive. Adults always think children can't do anything but when the time comes they can. Definately going to finish the whole series soon

    Story
"Plenty of problems but I like it anyway"

Firstly the narrator is terrible, the voices all sound the same making it hard to follow which wouldn't be as noticeable if you hadn't heard Tim curry expertly voice the characters in the previous books. Also, as I've thought the with all the books, I hate the authors style. He often uses complicated words and then takes too long to explain them like he's constantly trying to pad out the book with irrelevant jibber jabber, when he might as well just use a simpler word or raise the age range to those who would already understand them. That being said there is a lot of laugh out loud humour and I love the story so much and have grown so attached to its characters that I find it well worth listening to.

    Story
    "Great Story, Bad Performance."

The Story is great as usual, but the performance is dull. This book was narrated by Lemony Snicket himself, instead of Tim Curry. Lemony Snicket doesn't do the voice acting like Tim Curry.

    Overall, it's good.

"One of the best books in the series"

A gripping adventure yarn, written and read with a great deal of humour.
