Publisher's summary

“It's quite a life, Patterson's, and this fizzing, funny, often deeply moving memoir is a perfect way to understand the dizzying world of a best-selling writer." —Daily Mail

“Damn near addictive. I loved it . . . that Patterson guy can write!” –Ron Howard

THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER—How did a kid whose dad lived in the poorhouse become the most successful storyteller in the world?

  • On the morning he was born, he nearly died.
  • Growing up, he didn’t love to read. That changed.
  • He worked at a mental hospital in Massachusetts, where he met the singer James Taylor and the poet Robert Lowell.
  • While he toiled in advertising hell, James wrote the ad jingle line “I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us Kid.”
  • He once watched James Baldwin and Norman Mailer square off to trade punches at a party.
  • He’s only been in love twice. Both times are amazing.
  • Dolly Parton once sang “Happy Birthday” to James over the phone. She calls him J.J., for Jimmy James.
  • Three American presidents have invited him to golf with them.

How did a boy from small-town New York become the world’s most successful writer? How does he do it? He has always wanted to write the kind of novel that would be read and reread so many times that the binding breaks and the book literally falls apart. As he says, “I’m still working on that one.”

Critic reviews

“One of the greatest storytellers of all time, Patterson has led an amazing life. James Patterson by James Patterson brings to mind Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. I love the pithy, bright anecdotes, and at times, his poignant narrative will bring you to tears.” (New York Times best-selling author Patricia Cornwell)

“The book was damn near addictive. I loved it. Patterson recounts turning points and life-shaping lessons in short riveting bursts that inform, entertain, and satisfy - then propel you into the next story. That Patterson guy can write!” (Ron Howard)

“James Patterson does it again. The master storyteller of our times takes us on a funny, poignant, and ultimately triumphant journey through his own life. If you are among the many millions of us who enjoy reading Patterson’s books, or if you haven’t discovered him yet, you’ll love reading this one, too.” (Hillary Rodham Clinton)

Awesome!

Tried to give five stars for all three! My phone didn’t cooperate. My mom started reading your books years ago. As she would say. Anything with murder, madness and mayhem she loved. She taught me to love books before I could read them. I love every book I have read that you have written. Thank you for sharing stories about you! A big fan and I won’t stalk you!

My first Patterson experience

I have never read one of his books, but I know how popular he is, and I read his own by a graffiti. It was really good, and now I will begin reading his books.

If you like stories..

This book was a surprise but then again, not. It didn’t read from the beginning of his life to the present in the typical sense but was a timeline of stories. Beautiful stories. Real, humorous, and sometimes heart wrenching. It made me fall in love again with James Patterson, the author. And it made me want to figure out how to write a good outline.

I loved it!

James touched on so many elements of my life that I now have to buy the book, so I can mark it up, reread it and turn it into a well loved book-one that has pages falling out from reading my favorite chapters. Thank you!

James Pattersons short honest story

I can’t reading his books , so to hear him speak about career is a bonus. He’s got a great calming voice and of course a wonderfully captivating story teller. I throughly enjoyed this book.
I wish he would write a book on his thought of how to be an author, that would be worth waiting in a line all day to get .

Inspiring, especially for writers

I’ll confess, I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I was prepared for several hours of boorish back-patting. What Patterson instead delivered was hours of earnest, heartfelt, even kind and self aware storytelling.

As a writer myself, I was inspired and motivated.

Excellent work.
