Descubrió que el inconsciente se interpreta como un lenguaje y formuló una teoría del sujeto. En 1936 desarrolló su teoría sobre el "estadio del espejo", y publicó un número de artículos sobre su importancia en el desarrollo del sujeto. El estado (o fase) del espejo tiene que ver con la habilidad de un infante (de 6 a 18 meses) de reconocer su propia imago (o imagen) en el espejo, antes de ser capaz de hablar o tener el control de sus facultades motoras.
Para convertirse en un sujeto, o ser social, el infante debe llegar a un acuerdo con el reflejo no siendo idéntico a sí mismo como sujeto. Esto marca la entrada del niño al lenguaje, y la formación del Yo. La fase del espejo cambia el énfasis en la formación del sujeto de una base biológica a una base simbólica o del lenguaje. Aunque su influencia en las humanidades y ciencias sociales contemporáneas ha sido inconmensurable, la vida y - principalmente - la obra de Jacques Lacan no han estado exentas de una gran polémica y críticas de parte de eminentes intelectuales contemporáneos como el filósofo Jacques Derrida o el lingüista Noam Chomsky.
