Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Karen Ranney's first novel in a brand-new series spins the intriguing story of a beautiful widow and a devilishly handsome shipbuilder.

Seven years have passed since Glynis MacIain made the foolish mistake of declaring her love to Lennox Cameron, only to have him stare at her dumbfounded. Heartbroken, she accepted the proposal of a diplomat and moved to America, where she played the role of a dutiful wife among Washington's elite. Now a widow, Glynis is back in Scotland. Though Lennox can still unravel her with just one glance, Glynis is no longer the naïve girl Lennox knew and vows to resist him.

With the American Civil War raging, shipbuilder Lennox Cameron must complete a sleek new blockade runner for the Confederate Navy. He cannot afford any distractions, especially the one woman he's always loved. Glynis's cool demeanor tempts him to prove to her what a terrible mistake she made seven years ago.

As the war casts its long shadow across the ocean, will a secret from Glynis's past destroy any chance for a future between the two star-crossed lovers?

Beautiful, suspenseful & sensual story.

I loved this story. I do wish Ms. Ranney would have chosen Tim Campbell or Dave Gillies to narrate.
That would made it an easy 5 star review overall. Mr. Lister lacked the ability to express sensuality, romanticism or seduction. If you listen carefully (which I do because I check audiobooks for mistakes before they are uploaded to ACX, as part of my PA service,) you will hear a odd mixture of dialects in the narrator’s effort to perform a true Scottish accent. The story is very well written.

Story was good but made up drama

The leveling secrecy did not fit the crime. Would have been far more interesting if the heroine and hero had worked together using her diplomatic experience. Also the accents were very bad. Luster has an excellent voice for narrating the history channel in his dialect but not a romance novel were they need to be specific and consistent.

If you like accents, this is a cute 1 to listen to

At 1st I had a bit of trouble understanding the narrator's accents. Was he trying to do a Russian accent or Scottish? After I slowed down my normal 2.75 speed it was easier to understand. (The jury is still out on what accent he was doing. haha) I found the novel had a good basis and you don't find too many novels that talk about the American Civil War and what part other countries did or didn't play in it. That was intriguing to me. I finished the book in less than a day, so this one is a good one to listen to while doing chores. I wouldn't feel comfortable playing this out loud during the sexual encounters though, so if you have young ones make sure you have earbuds in.
