Publisher's summary

A New York Times best seller.

A Good Morning America, FabFitFun, and Marie Claire Book Club pick

In Five Years is as clever as it is moving, the rare read-in-one-sitting novel you won’t forget.” (Chloe Benjamin, New York Times best-selling author of The Immortalists)

Perfect for fans of Me Before You and One Day - a striking, powerful, and moving love story following an ambitious lawyer who experiences an astonishing vision that could change her life forever.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Dannie Kohan lives her life by the numbers. She is nothing like her lifelong best friend - the wild, whimsical, believes-in-fate Bella. Her meticulous planning seems to have paid off after she nails the most important job interview of her career and accepts her boyfriend’s marriage proposal in one fell swoop, falling asleep completely content.

But when she awakens, she’s suddenly in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man. Dannie spends one hour exactly five years in the future before she wakes again in her own home on the brink of midnight - but it is one hour she cannot shake.

In Five Years is an unforgettable love story, but it is not the one you’re expecting.

Only time will tell
"What would you do if you had a glimpse into your future and nothing was as it should be? In Rebecca Serle’s latest novel we meet Dannie Kohan, a woman who has it all together: the high-powered job, the doting boyfriend, and the locked-in future. That is, until she falls asleep and wakes up in an entirely altered existence, with a different man, and a life that she did not plan fastidiously for. From the moment you lay ears on this one you’re hooked. Voiced by Megan Hilty (#smash4eva), Dannie’s spirit is perfectly embodied. You hear her calm assuredness alongside the intensity and desire of someone who didn’t know they were lost until they were found. I caught myself holding my breath several times as she recounts the tension of idling through status quo days and ruminating on this alternate reality she can’t shake and its implications. Cancel your plans for the weekend when you press play on this one, as you won’t be able to pause this unexpected, heartbreaking love story." —Kelley S., Audible Editor

Not for me

I thought this novel is a love story but it’s more about friendship. First few parts got me hooked. Mid to ending was a blah

Fantastic girl-friend story

I listened to the audible version of “In Five Years” by Rebecca Serle, narrated by Megan Hilty. This is a nice listen in the time of the COVID-19 virus, meaning, it’s a book-candy sort of read that has a bit of depth, some sadness, yet ends hopeful.

The protagonist, Dannie Cohen is one of those people that has her life planned in detail. She’s a high-achiever and a successful corporate lawyer. Everything she’s done, was done correctly and with a purpose. As the story opens, she is expecting to become engaged and also land a dream job.

What requires a deep leap of fiction to enjoy this story is that Dannie has one of those realistic dreams that throws her reality. We’ve all had those, realistic dreams, where, when we awake, we are discombobulated, confused about reality and our dream state. And yes, sometimes there is some hang time with crazy dreams. But with Dannie, she doesn’t shake it for years. She feels it’s a premonition dream. And the problem with the dream is that it doesn't align with her plans and expectations.

Her best friend, Bella is wealthy with a bohemian spirit, who can fly to Europe at the drop of a hat. Bella is fun and can be, since she’s financially supported by wealthy parents. She is an artist and owns an art gallery. Bella and Dannie’s relationship is one that leaves your heart soaring. This is a novel about a girl friendship that deepens and evolves over the years.

Author Rebecca Serle writes an uplifting girl-friend story here. Friendships like this are ones that we ladies dream about. There is some sadness, which provides depth to the story. There are a few unexpected plot twists. It’s a fun read that can take your mind off of the sadness of reality.

MUST READ OR LISTEN TO!

I started listening to this book and didn't stop until I finished it! Best book I've read in quite awhile. Had me captured from start to end. It was a clean, love story, friendship, mystery real life struggles. Very relatable.

Impossibly Addictive

I cannot even put words to this impeccably written & narrated gift of life. So moving & such a testament to the beauty of deep rooted friendships, the unexpected silver-linings in hardships and the empowering spirit of a woman who stands tall, proud and does not hide behind irreverence to speak up for who she is and what she wants. ANOTHER phenomenal piece by Rebecca Serle. Like an irresistible soufflé - one must & will always go back for more.

lovely story

I unexpectedly loved this book. There were a couple places where the inflection of the narration was a bit off, but overall, this was a good listen. I can't remember how I stumbled across this. This book is way outside of my normal genre, but I would recommend it to any woman who knows what it's like to have a really great (plutonic) girlfriend.
