Publisher's summary

If You Build It... is a funny and moving memoir about fathers, fate and field of dreams. Dwier Brown played Kevin Costner’s father for five minutes at the end of the movie Field of Dreams. Despite being an actor for 35 years and performing in hundreds of other films, plays, and television shows, it was those five minutes that changed his life. Since the movie’s release in 1989, Brown has been recognized by dozens of fans who have told him poignant stories about their fathers and how watching the film changed their lives. Their touching stories helped Brown put into perspective his own father’s unexpected death just a month before he began filming Field of Dreams.

If you build it…he will come. If you write it…they will read – or in this case, listen.

A memoir of the making of “Field of Dreams” would be in itself a gift to read, but Dwier Brown’s tome includes confessions from fans who have felt compelled to share their stories of their fathers with Mr. Brown when they recognize him from his role in the iconic film. These confessions add another layer of pathos that a straight retelling of on-set stories might not. I have long said that the audio versions of memoirs and autobiographies read by the author are so much more powerful than just visually reading their words. Hearing these stories read in Mr. Brown’s Mid-Western/Protestant voice, and then switch to his impersonation of Burt Lancaster, or a spot-on Dorchester/Bostonian accent would be great moments missed if I had not listened to this audiobook.

In the words of his acting coach, “Acting isn’t lying, acting is telling the truth.” Thank you, Mr. Brown for sharing the truth of your life experiences in Hollywood, on the farm, and in the field of corn.

fun

Narration was delightful, especially the mimicking. Took me back to the movie, took me back to Ohio. Moved me to hear that so many other people were touched by this story.

Baseball Fathers and Sons

Field of Dreams has been one of my favorite movies since first viewing it. Many fathers and sons struggle with their relationships with each other. This short book discusses one young mans struggle and how his chance to play John Consella in the movie touched not only himself but many many other fathers and sons.

Captivating

A captivating and simple story that I did not want to end. Much like the source material this story was sublime.

Amazing

I saw the movie Field of dreams when i was 8 and still brought me so me joy. i like the mystery and how driven one person can be to follow something they cannot explain. i wish i could have those moments with my father, he's still alive, but i think he's reached all his can give. diwer is a wonder storyteller and would listen to anything else he narrates. thank u for sharing. those 5 minutes meant the world...

Father

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Dwier's story of his life, and life events leading up to and after filming the movie The Field of Dreams. And hearing about his father and his life and memories and the effects it all had on him. I along with many others cried the tears this book and movie brought to me, with the memories of my own father and the relationship we had, or didnt have, in his short life of 68 years and mine of 18 before cancer had taken him from us. This book is heart wrenching, funny and interesting. Very descriptive and well writen. You can visualize each and every moment spoke of and you live it as you read, right along with Dwier as he tells his story. I highly recommend anyone, of all ages should take their time to read it.
