Publisher's summary

From the Booker shortlisted author of 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World.

It feels like the world is falling apart. So how do we keep hold of our optimism? How do we nurture the parts of ourselves that hope, trust and believe in something better? And how can we stay sane in this world of division?

In this beautifully written and illuminating polemic, Booker Prize nominee Elif Shafak reflects on our age of pessimism, when emotions guide and misguide our politics and misinformation and fear are the norm.

A tender, uplifting plea for optimism, Shafak draws on her own memories and delves into the power of stories to reveal how writing can nurture democracy, tolerance and progress. And in the process, she answers one of the most urgent questions of our time.

Profound thinking and ageless wisdom

Everyone should listen to Elif Shafak’s essay. It knocks on the door of our collective consciousness to wake up from apathy and oversimplification of the world.

As a society we drifted to selfishness and extreme individualism that breaks the very collective fabric of humanity. We are easily manipulated and distracted by glitter and misinformation, losing our minds and hearts.

Interesting reflection about the world we live in

The book is an author's reflection on concepts like identity, democracy, diversity, freedom, equality and wisdom. It does so by proposing innovative approaches to these universal topics such as the acceptance of having multiple belongings, the power of storytelling to connect humanity, the need to balance conscious optimism and creative pessimist, the self-narcissistic meaning of surrounding ourselves by very similar people or how slowing down is a must to truly acquire knowledge. The highlight is how beautifully Elif, the author, expresses herself, she is a true artist of words.
