Publisher's summary

The National Book Award-winning novel about one remarkable young woman who dares to defy fate, perfect for listeners who enjoyed A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park or Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai.

Like many girls her age in India, thirteen-year-old Koly faces her arranged marriage with hope and courage. But Koly's story takes a terrible turn when in the wake of the ceremony, she discovers she's been horribly misled—her life has been sold for a dowry. Can she forge her own future, even in the face of time-worn tradition?

Perfect for schools and classrooms, this universally acclaimed, bestselling, and award-winning novel by master of historical fiction Gloria Whelan is a gripping tale of hope that will transport listeners of all ages.

An amazing story

I was given this book as a child and bought it for my daughter. She's stubborn and loves to read but can be difficult about sitting down to read a book lately so I bought the audiobook and she loved it. She said the characters were alive in her head and that the voice was soothing and spirited (don't bother telling her that they can't be both she says they are and that's that).

The author has woven a beautiful, rich story full of delightful visual descriptions. The heroine is believable and likable. The narrator brings it all to life with beauty in her voice.

A sad tale with optimism and spirit.

Well-written and we'll narrated. I listened at 1.7 speed and it was like thw young girl was rushing to tell her sad tale with its happy ending.
