In Robert E. Lee, the award-winning historian Allen Guelzo has written the definitive biography of the general, following him from his refined upbringing in Virginia high society, to his long career in the U.S. Army, his agonized decision to side with Virginia when it seceded from the Union, and his leadership during the Civil War. Above all, Guelzo captures Robert E. Lee in all his complexity--his hypocrisy and courage, his outward calm and inner turmoil, his honor and his disloyalty.

It involves choices about who gets to participate in any given society and the ways in which societies have resolved the tension between individual self-interest and the common good.

Story
The history of the Boston Tea Party is a hidden one. Why? Since it was a clandestine operation, all sorts of rumors and legends grew up around the event—many collected decades after the American Revolution had ended. At its core, however, the night of December 16, 1773, when colonials dumped tea from British ships into Boston Harbor, was more than a fight over tea and taxes. It was a struggle over the very nature of democracy and self-governance.

In Made in America, Bryson de-mythologizes his native land, explaining how a dusty hamlet with neither woods nor holly became Hollywood, how the Wild West wasn't won, why Americans say 'lootenant' and 'Toosday', how Americans were eating junk food long before the word itself was cooked up, as well as exposing the true origins of the G-string, the original $64,000 question, and Dr Kellogg of cornflakes fame.

Home Fires is the powerful saga of the Gordon family--real people, names unchanged. Spanning nearly five decades, from the end of World War II to the early 1990s, their story has the scope, depth, wealth of incident, and emotional intensity of a great novel, and an abundance of humor, scandal, warmth, and trauma--the recognizable components of family life. This is also a masterful chronicle of the turbulent postwar era, illuminating the interplay between private life and profound cultural changes.

Story
The era known as Reconstruction is one of the unhappiest times in American history. It succeeded in reuniting the nation politically after the Civil War but in little else. Conflict shifted from the battlefield to the Capitol as Congress warred with President Andrew Johnson over just what to do with the South. Johnson's plan of Presidential Reconstruction, which was sympathetic to the former Confederacy, would ultimately lead to his impeachment and the institution of Radical Reconstruction.

In this Audible Exclusive performance by Matt Lucas of Great Expectations, Charles Dickens demonstrates that conscience, loyalty and empathy are virtues far more valuable than intellect, wealth and social standing. First published in Dickens’ own periodical, All the Year Round, the novel was divided into nine monthly instalments, from December 1860 to August 1861. Unsurprisingly, it was an instant success and managed to sell over 100,000 copies per week. Though written at a challenging time in Dickens’ life, when the impending breakdown of his marriage loomed over him, Great Expectations proves to be one of his most optimistic, comical and romantic novels.

the performance of the context is okay enough though the recitation of Lincoln's speech leaves the listener wanting.

Thankfully, it was Free.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
This is 12-minute-or-so discussion of the Battle of Gettysburg, followed by a reading of The Gettysburg Address. One can not expect much depth in such a brief document, and I guess its main value is to people with little knowledge of the battle, or to those who may have an interest in purchasing a book on the topic.
The title is a misnomer: little time is spent discussing why Gettysburg mattered, and what discussion there is on that topic tends to cover well-known ground: how the Union needed a victory, etc. The beginning discusses things such as casualty figures, and challenges some commonly-held perceptions about the battle, but (doubtless due to the time limit of this free release) offers little in the way of arguments to support the author's assertions.Other topics discussed herein are also claimed to not be widely accepted, and yet to my experience, are "nothing new." I am, however, more widely read on the American Civil War than many laymen, so take that with as much salt as you wish.
Since I view this as a marketing tool for another product, might have been more helpful? Perhaps an excerpt from the other book, giving a sense of the author's style, or something indicating the drama the author would try to focus on.Utterly lacking was any sense of why I should obtain the promoted book, as opposed to any of the many others available on the topic.
If you are unfamiliar with the topic, this free publication may whet your appetite to know more about this critical event in American history, and if so, that is all to the good. Purchasing the book it promotes may then also be a very helpful action, and *perhaps* even be a very good choice. But this free promotion makes that less than clear, and fails even more so when dealing with an historically literate audience.
