Publisher's summary

Imagine you could travel back to the 14th century. What would you see? What would you smell? More to the point, where are you going to stay? And what are you going to eat?

Ian Mortimer shows us that the past is not just something to be studied; it is also something to be lived. He sets out to explain what life was like in the most immediate way, through taking you to the Middle Ages.

The result is the most astonishing social history book you are ever likely to read: evolutionary in its concept, informative and entertaining in its detail, and startling for its portrayal of humanity in an age of violence, exuberance and fear.

Great and easy listening

A nice history of medieval England from the perspective of the people who lived it. Easy to listen to and understand. Detailed and selves into everyday life. I used this as a source of inspiration for creating a realistic fleshed out medieval village in my writing and this didn’t disappoint.

Really good! Better than expected!

A vivid depiction of regular life in medieval England, from the lowest peasant up to the king. The author sets you in the eyes of a traveler on the ground of England in the 1300s. You see detailed descriptions of the common peasant lives, the free yeomans and the aristocracy. it at least touches on most parts of normal life and really gives a sense of what it would have been like to live during that time. I'm a history buff myself and i was quite pleasantly surprised by what a pleasure it was to listen to this. I would 100% recommend this to anyone who's interested in history at all.

Simply a great book.

I loved this. The reader of this particular book was fabulous. I would get books just to hear him read them as it really flowed and made not only for great information but great entertainment. I thoroughly recommend this for anyone who enjoys reading about the middle ages. The author picked the 14th century. A time between 1300 and 1400 for his time traveling. At first I wasn't so sure, but on reflection this is probably one of the better periods of time in the middle ages to pick that offers a wide variety for the time traveler to experience. this book makes you wish time traveling was a thing and that we could all step back and not only see the middle ages but taste, feel, smell, and hear the day-to-day lives of all those people back then.

Cultural immersion in a long ago age.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I liked the perspective of the book. It is important to understand as much as possible from the periods point of view rather than judging it only from our current perspective.

Any additional comments?

On occasion, there was a bit of condescension in the narrators presentation which defeats the purpose of looking at the period through its own eyes.
