Publisher's summary

In this comprehensive survey, William Hudson explores the forces responsible for bringing about the Renaissance, which he describes as the West's "transition from the medieval to the modern world".

Voyages of discovery, inventions, the revival of classical learning, and the advent of science contributed to the intellectual upheavals of this creative period, and are reflected in its literature and art. Hudson focuses on the one thread of continuity that he sees as both the seed and the fruit of this exciting era: the awakening of secular humanism and the emergence of the individual. This history gives the listener a lucid, perceptive analysis of the splendid Renaissance.

A beautiful listen

This audio book is beautiful to listen to; written in a style of prose one doesn't hear much these days. The author is very much a part of the book, and methinks not entirely impartial, but illuminates the period in a fascinating and very engaging way.

Tapestry of an age

The more extensive one's education or reading, the more enjoyable this will be. Written in 1912, the author expects the reader to have a passing knowledge of the touchstones of Western culture. Occasionally I was adrift, but all in all, it was rewarding because he weaves so many strands into an understanding of the times and culture. He does not "talk down." I feel enriched, although sometimes it was a battle to stick with it.
