Publisher's summary

This is the story of a unique American hero who came of age as an astronaut during the few dramatic years when man reached the moon. Cernan's career spanned the entire Apollo program, from the tragic fire that killed three of his comrades on Apollo 1, through the moment when he left man's last footprint on the moon as commander of Apollo 17.

This is the inside story of how space was conquered, and at what price. Cernan writes candidly not only about the program, but about the high divorce rate among the astronauts, the loss of family privacy that came with celebrity, and the ever-present shadows of death and failure.

Yet Another Perspective

There are points in this book in which Cernan describes being on the moon and a VIBE comes across that is truly amazing. I have read/listened to many different accounts of the Apollo missions, but there is something about this one by Cernan that really stuck with me. Much of what he writes I already knew about, but the bits that I hadn't heard of - and especially, the "vibe" - made this book a real treat to listen to.

Sometimes it's better to let someone else narrate an author's work, however this isn't one of those times. Cernan's own voice adds a lot to the experience.

Great story of Apollo, emphasis on Apollo 17

I was a teenager when Apollo 17 landed. The Apollo years were a time of great excitement for exploration. Mr. Cernan does a great job telling the story from the inside. The public saw beautifully executed missions. But we didn't know about the risks and uncertainty which were a part of the space program.
The book brings us into the Apollo program, making it much more personal. Especially the flight of Apollo 17 with Cernan at the helm.

In his own words!

To listen to an incredible story from the man who wrote it and lived it, is a true privilege. Eugene Cernan is a remarkable individual who has lived through an amazing time in history and changed they way we all look at the Moon. The story told from the author can be funny, serious & life changing. The part of the Florida police officer will have you shaking your head and laughing out loud, especially the southern drawl Geno uses.
More important is how he shares his daughters and grand daughters comments. Listen to the story to find out what was said, but it's perfect from a child's perspective, and adds a wonderful image to the whole story. I highly recommend this audio book, and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Most hilarious and entertaining

Cernan's humor and brilliant narration makes this audio-book a fun and addictive listen! I absolutely enjoyed it. Cernan doesn't hesitate to express his personal (sometimes controversial) opinions, and I really like that. If I want an objective and detailed history of the 1960s space program, I would go for scholarly books written by space historians. The first-hand anecdotes from the last man to step foot on the moon left me laughing out loud quite a few times during this 5 hours of listening.

Gene Cernan is the man!

Very easy to follow, a little sparse on technical information but that's just my personal preference, not a reflection of the quality of this book. Would definitely recommend.

Great Read - Great Listen

I have researched and followed the various programs that led to the Apollo missions. Many of the astronauts have written books and shared their own perspectives. I find it great to listen to Gene Himself, and that his perspective is very well balanced. Not as much as "First Man" perhaps, but an excellent book!

Cernan's humility stood out.

As a military and civilian pilot I found Gene's humilty and restrained ego refreshing and it made the stories all the more human and relatable. As a kid who grew up during the Space Race, I still cannot get enough of these critical details and stories. Very well done. We need more people like Gene Cernan in this world. He is truly missed.

From the Last Man himself

This is a beautiful insight from the last man to step off the Moon from the Apollo missions. Gene was a great fellow and to hear his amazing story in his voice is a special thing.

Great Take from Cernan

The Last Man on the Moon is written and narrated by Eugene Cernan, the last astronaut on the moon. I enjoyed hearing his version of NASA's time before and while he was a part of it. Cernan writes reflectively and documents the struggles his wife and others had at home. He also doesn't gloss over some of the harder parts of his job, his family life, or celebrity like some other astronaut authors have done. For anyone interested in NASA's history or space exploration, this is a nice, quick listen.
