"An exciting narrative presented by a first-rate storyteller." (Publishers Weekly)
"The book's great virtue is that it allows a number of the rapidly diminishing band of survivors of the whole experience to have their say." (Booklist)
The quality of the narration and the gripping nature of the story of the rescue of several hundred American POW's made this one of the best audible books I've listened to in the last few years. Higly, highly recommended for WWII buffs as well as for those who like an adventure.
I downloaded this book after viewing a documentary about the raid on Cabanatuan. The movie left me wanting more detail, and this title wonderfully provided it. The story of Bataan and the eventual rescue is rivetting. Patrick Lawlor is an excellent narrator for this type of story. Listen!!!! This one's a winner!!!!
I read this after reading Ghost Soldiers, one of the best WWII books I have read, so it was kind of a let down. It did give a different perspective on Raid. Ghost Solders was more about the raid itself, where this book talked more about the camp and the under ground that help the prisoners.
I'm just this guy, y'know?
This is an amazing story. I particularly enjoyed the parts about the Filipino Resistance to the occupation and their efforts to help the POW's at great cost and personal risk. Heroism abounds...
Yes, because there's so much that is untaught in US schools about the liberation of the Philippines in WW2. Was amazing to hear about everything that happened. Was shocked that I learned nothing of it until now. I'm so happy that I randomly decided to listen to this audio book.
I shall return!
somewhat miss titled, but the title is the reason I bought the book. You get much more than just the raid. You get the whole history from the fall of the Philippians and then the reoccupation by US forces. You don't get to the raid until 3/4 into the book ... that's a good thing.
Please read this book!!! This is a must read!!! It took me two days to get through this book and that's because I had school and evidently had to sleep.. I had no idea about such horrors in the Pacific and the sacrifice and courage that the Alamo Scouts, ranger 6th and guerrilla Philippino fighters exhibited in rescuing the POW's Cabanatuan is something stellar. Gripping story and a MUST read!!!
Near the top
The opening of the actual raid
No, just a great job on all parts
