Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Funny. Irreverant. Historic. If American history had ever been presented this poignantly, more of us might have paid attention. Stewart and friends run the gamut: republicans and democrats, deadpan and laughable, serious and totally absurd. The vast array of comedians each deliver hilarious soundbites and yet the book comes together with stunning coherence. — Chris Doheny

Publisher's summary

Jon Stewart, host of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Daily Show, and his coterie of patriots deliver a hilarious look at American government.

Termed a "political king-maker" by Newsweek, and "the Dan Rather of infotainment" by Vanity Fair, Jon Stewart, along with the writers of The Daily Show, combines his riotous wit and razor-sharp insight in this hilarious book.

American-style democracy is the world's most beloved form of government, which explains why so many other nations are eager for us to impose it on them. But what is American democracy?

In America (The Audiobook), Jon Stewart and The Daily Show writing staff offer their insights into our unique system of government, dissecting its institutions, explaining its history and processes, and exploring the reasons why concepts like "one man, one vote", "government by the people", and "every vote counts" have become such popular urban myths.

Among the topics:

  • Ancient Rome: The First Republicans
  • The Founding Fathers: Young, Gifted, and White
  • The President: King of Democracy
  • The Supreme Court: 18 Legs, Four Tits, One Mission
  • Running for Office: What Are You Thinking?
  • The Media: Can It Be Stopped?
  • The Future of Democracy: The Constitutional Robocracy and You!

"Cheeky, irreverent, and playfully ingenuous....This humorous sendup of American politics never fails to entertain, poke fun, and provoke thought." (Publishers Weekly)
"The devil's own comedic handiwork, a side-splitting guide to the abuses and absurdities built into our political processes and institutions....Sustained clever writing and a smart, durable premise....As with Mr. Stewart's priceless anchorman persona and his show's hawk-eyed editing for real news gaffes, there is enough truth here to make America almost as instructive as it is sly." (The New York Times)

    John delivers yet again...

In a time where the difference between a laugh and a cry depends your sense of humor John gives us a big dish of unapologetic hilarity. John comes across as unattached from the actual problems facing our country to give a "higher comedic" perspective. The general theme of this audio book is, "we will all look back, Democrats and Republicans alike, and laugh - might as well start now."

You'll love it if you like the Daily Show

Since the Daily Show is my all time favorite TV show, I was hoping the book would be similar. It is. Stewart does seem to do a better job of not being very obviously liberal (as he has become on the show of late) which I think it a good thing.

My only complaint is that I'd love to get the unabridged version on audio.

    A great Audiobook

This is the first Audiobook I purchased and unfortunately has set the bar high for all to follow. I listened to this while driving, and it was the perfect companion. Besides having the sharp wit of Jon Stewart, It also provides his well timed delivery and sarcasm. It was perfect to listen to in segments and had me laughing and enjoying throughout. True to Stewart's style, there were also informational tid bits in with the satire. I would recommend this as an audiobook to anyone who enjoys Stewart and his show.

    First-Class Humor

I must admit that I have listened to this audio book several times over and laughed and laughed and laughed each time. My only complaint is that I had to settle for an abridged version!

    Funny but cheap

I am probably being too harsh, but I was disappointed in this book. I think Jon Stewart and the Daily Show crew are pretty much comic and political geniuses, so I listened with high expectations. It certainly was funny, as well as clever. But honestly I felt it went for the cheap laugh much too often. A surprising amount of the humor came from having actors say curse words while portraying icons of American history. Yes it was amusing to hear Betsy Ross say dirty words, but really I expected more from Jon.

    Solid effort

While I believe Jon Stewart has gone off the liberal deep end over the past year or so, this book is refreshingly moderate and hilarious. It is true to the type of humor the Daily Show had in its first few years. The fact that it is read by Stewart and includes the guest readers from his show, is one of the strongest aspects of the audio book. A must read.
