Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Funny. Irreverant. Historic. If American history had ever been presented this poignantly, more of us might have paid attention. Stewart and friends run the gamut: republicans and democrats, deadpan and laughable, serious and totally absurd. The vast array of comedians each deliver hilarious soundbites and yet the book comes together with stunning coherence. — Chris Doheny

Publisher's summary

Jon Stewart, host of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Daily Show, and his coterie of patriots deliver a hilarious look at American government.

Termed a "political king-maker" by Newsweek, and "the Dan Rather of infotainment" by Vanity Fair, Jon Stewart, along with the writers of The Daily Show, combines his riotous wit and razor-sharp insight in this hilarious book.

American-style democracy is the world's most beloved form of government, which explains why so many other nations are eager for us to impose it on them. But what is American democracy?

In America (The Audiobook), Jon Stewart and The Daily Show writing staff offer their insights into our unique system of government, dissecting its institutions, explaining its history and processes, and exploring the reasons why concepts like "one man, one vote", "government by the people", and "every vote counts" have become such popular urban myths.

Among the topics:

  • Ancient Rome: The First Republicans
  • The Founding Fathers: Young, Gifted, and White
  • The President: King of Democracy
  • The Supreme Court: 18 Legs, Four Tits, One Mission
  • Running for Office: What Are You Thinking?
  • The Media: Can It Be Stopped?
  • The Future of Democracy: The Constitutional Robocracy and You!

"Cheeky, irreverent, and playfully ingenuous....This humorous sendup of American politics never fails to entertain, poke fun, and provoke thought." (Publishers Weekly)
"The devil's own comedic handiwork, a side-splitting guide to the abuses and absurdities built into our political processes and institutions....Sustained clever writing and a smart, durable premise....As with Mr. Stewart's priceless anchorman persona and his show's hawk-eyed editing for real news gaffes, there is enough truth here to make America almost as instructive as it is sly." (The New York Times)

If you love John Stewart you will love this!

Scary to think that these guys do a fake news show. More scary to think that they are the best source for news and information. Great download, a must purchase. Can't wait for the book to come out. Fans of O'Reilly, Coulter, or Limbaugh probably won't enjoy this,

Runs hot and cold..but when it's hot...it's hot

Listening to this book, I alternated between fits of side-hurting laughter and periods when it was a little slow. I'd estimate 25% of the time I found it hilarious, 50% amusing and the remainder a bit inane. However the 25% where you are laughing until tears run down your face makes it well worth being patient when they are off a bit. Overall, well worth the purchase price. Just don't listen to this while you are driving, or you might run off the road.

    Pass This One By

To use the vernacular, Jon Stewart phoned this one in.

I LOVE him on "The Daily Show". Unfortunately, this is NOT that. The only similarity is the voice.

IF you just HAVE to buy this audiobook, fast forward to about 60 minutes in, wait for the laugh, and then fast forward again to 150+ minutes in. You will miss one other laugh, but it's more of a chuckle. I can't tell you what's after 150 minutes in 'cause I couldn't take it any more.

Save your money and, more importantly, your time. Pass on this book.

    Fails both its audiences

This book seems to have been written for two audiences. One is left-leaning adults sincerely interested in American History and politics, who wonder how our country has managed to get itself into its current untenable position - hated by much of the world and denying its citizens their constitutional rights under the comically named "Patriot Act." (These are the people who tend to enjoy "The Daily Show.") The other audience is males between 15 and 25, who might enjoy the all too frequent digressions into dirty words and jokes about sex. Unfortunately, the book is likely to bore both groups. The sophomoric humor is too frequent for one group and not frequent enough for the other. There are a few amusing political musings, but not enough for this middle aged female, who became extremely annoyed with the recurrence of the "F" word in virtually every story. (The only stories that seemed "F" free were presented by a so-called Canadian.) Strong language is only effective when used occasionally. Otherwise it's just indicative of a lack of vocabulary. I was sadly disappointed by this book.

Finally a book for stoned slackers...

America (the Audiobook) is a fake Social Studies textbook brought to you by the same people that bring you a basic cable fake news show. If you love the Daily Show for its fart jokes and stories about the 'cooter festival,' then you will probably not enjoy most of this book. If you love the Daily Show for its sharp-witted writing and tounge-in-cheek satire then you should definitely download this book. The principles of the show narrate this audiobook with the same brilliant delivery that we have come to expect. I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion. It is well edited and fast-paced; I highly recommend it.
Ps. Don't worry, they still managed to work in a few fart jokes.

    Trash

I listened to Ann Coulter, Bill Maher, and then Jon Stewart, et al, in that order, 2 weeks before the 2004 election. This "reading plan" was perfect for contrasting the three works: the intelligence level of the content decreased as the profanity increased.

Without the repetition of the F-word, "America (The Audiobook)" would last less than an hour. If the lies about Jefferson and Sally Hemmings (debunked in Coulter's "How to Talk to a Liberal") were removed, there would be 30 minutes of bad jokes, snide comments about Jesus as the only true judge, and references to Saturday morning cartoons.

The only positive was 5 minutes of accurate descriptions of talk show hosts.

This was a waste of my time and money.

whew! still airing out my ipod

I was so suprised at how much I disliked this book. Jon Stewart is one of my favorites. He's so witty and spot on normally.
There are some very funny moments and I kept thinking that things were picking up... but then things fell flat again, and stayed that way for what felt like forever.

This read is also such a good example of how near continual use of swear words takes away their punch and any cool factor they have. He wound up sounding ridiculous instead of hip.
I sure wish I hadn't bothered with this unfunny, disappointing waste of time. I'll catch him on TV and try to forget...

    Funny, but no visuals

This book is funny, but not very well suited to audiobook. The print version has pictures that add to the hilarity. I felt like the audiobook was missing something.

    Lost in the Translation

Much of what made "America (The Textbook)" so funny is lost in the audiobook format (including the place on the inside cover where you put your name, the year, and condition of the book ). Sometimes there is no substitute for the real thing.

    Syrup Without the Pancakes

I'm a huge Jon Stewart fan who always TIVO's his half-hour shows. If Jon Stewart claims that he has a smart college-educated audience (his response to the nut Bill O'Reilly) why has he dumbed down the book with such an *abridged* version of it. He mistakenly thinks audio book readers have a short attention-span. To a reader who regularly reads 16-hour audio books AND who reads everyday, I was a bit annoyed that they choose to produce a book that is less than 4 hours (a day?s commute and a couple of workouts). Wait for the UNabridged version or READ the book. Definitely pass on this download - it's syrup without the pancakes.
