Publisher's summary

On New Year's Day in 1870, 10-year-old Adolph Korn was kidnapped by an Apache raiding party. Traded to Comanches, he thrived in the rough nomadic existence, quickly becoming one of the tribe's fiercest warriors. Forcibly returned to his parents after three years, Korn never adjusted to life in white society. He spent his last years living in a cave, all but forgotten by his family.

That is, until Scott Zesch stumbled upon his great-great-great-uncle's grave. Determined to understand how such a "good boy" could have become Indianized so completely, Zesch traveled across the West, digging through archives, speaking with Comanche elders, and tracking eight other child captives from the region with hauntingly similar experiences. With a historian's rigor and a novelist's eye, Zesch paints a vivid portrait of life on the Texas frontier in The Captured and offers one of the few nonfiction accounts of captivity.

Mesmerizing.

This was so fascinating and offers quite a look into early American life. I hated for this book to end.

Excellent!

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy Native American and Texas history. Very engaging story, sounds well researched, seemed to fairly depict all the parties.

I liked it

Great book. Definitely worth a listen. It sheds light on the show 1883 for me. I love the Era. I've been to most of the towns. It also cleared up something for me. The town called Goodnight in Texas isn't about an evening greeting. It's a last name. They have a cemetery.

Great perspective

It was a great perspective on both sides of the conflict during the wars between whites and Native Americans

Absolutely incredible.

Absolutely incredible history that I’m so glad wasn’t completely lost to time. I love that the author chose to write about other white Indian’s/captives and not just their ancestor. Phenomenal research was done to provide many detailed accounts that were mostly not in any written form. A great and important read. Very heartbreaking the pull to two different world’s each captive felt after returning home.

Excellent Story!

The history here is important. I’m so grateful this was researched. Some reviews had reservations about stories of all the captives. I really enjoyed that aspect. The narration was superb. A quick listen. Really enjoyed.
