Publisher's summary

Pulitzer Prize, General Nonfiction, 2009

In this groundbreaking historical expose, Douglas A. Blackmon brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history: an Age of Neoslavery that thrived from the aftermath of the Civil War through the dawn of World War II.

Using a vast record of original documents and personal narratives, Douglas A. Blackmon unearths the lost stories of slaves and their descendants who journeyed into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation and then back into the shadow of involuntary servitude shortly thereafter.

By turns moving, sobering, and shocking, this unprecedented account reveals the stories of those who fought unsuccessfully against the re-emergence of human labor trafficking, the companies that profited most from neoslavery, and the insidious legacy of racism that reverberates today.

Critic reviews

“Shocking....Eviscerates one of our schoolchildren's most basic assumptions: that slavery in America ended with the Civil War.” ( The New York Times)
“The genius of Blackmon's book is that it illuminates both the real human tragedy and the profoundly corrupting nature of the Old South slavery as it transformed to establish a New South social order.” ( The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Very Well Written But Sad, Disturbing

This book illustrates man's inhumanity to man. In light of what is happening in this country now, it certainly continues. An eye-opening read.

History uncut of the evolution of Slavery.

This is a great book. It is a part of history completely rewritten to gloss over inhumanity, greed, blatant disregard for the Constitution of the United States. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in US history.

Eye opener to injustice to poor white and black.

Would you consider the audio edition of Slavery by Another Name to be better than the print version?

I never read the printed version. I may not have finished the book if I picked it up. Audible made the book come to life and pity the suffering that took place.

Have you listened to any of Dennis Boutsikaris’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

NO.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Very long book could not listen to in one sitting.

Awe inspiring

This book allowed me to see and feel the horrible lives of my ancestors and the inconceivable sadistic treatment the slave owners as well as sheriff and others upon black race. This rage was predominantly in the south. I am grateful to the author that opened my
Eyes to truths that I was privileged to see. A must read to anyone seeking truths concerning the horror of slavery.

Understand the post slavery timeline.

A must read to understand post slavery southern life for many blacks. You come to understand why blacks have failed to become as succesful as you would think given the time that has lapsed since slavery.

This book should change your life

Or at least your understanding of American history. The book untangles much of America's deceit and delusions about its racial history and lays it all out for you.

Hard to Digest

Without a doubt, listening to this dark past history really brings out how cruel Homo Sapiens can be. I did not know of this inhumane treatment of fellow humans & as other past crimes come out, my disgust of this era grows.
