Publisher's summary

Every schoolchild is taught the great turning points in American history, such as Gettysburg, Pearl Harbor, the Kennedy assassination, and 9/11. But other, equally significant events have altered our destiny without being understood - or even widely noticed. Acclaimed conservative historian Larry Schweikart now takes an in-depth look at seven such episodes and reveals the profound ways they have shaped America. He also asks listeners to reconsider them not just in terms of what happened but in light of the Founding Fathers' vision for our nation. What would Washington, Jefferson, or Madison have said about these events?

In the same accessible style of his previous best sellers - A Patriot's History of the United States and 48 Liberal Lies About American History - Professor Schweikart doesn't merely recount our history; he forces us to rethink what makes our country great. He shows how individual liberty, private enterprise, and small government helped build a free and prosperous nation. Conversely, whenever these values have been threatened by big government, oppressive taxes, and special interests, we lose sight of the principles that made us strong. You'll be surprised to learn how these events spurred sweeping changes that still affect us today.

For instance:

  • Martin Van Buren's consolidation of the first national political party made it possible for Barack Obama to get elected almost two centuries later
  • Dwight Eisenhower's heart attack led to a war on red meat, during which the government took control over Americans' diets
  • The rock 'n' roll craze (often mistakenly claimed as a liberal phenomenon) helped bring about the decline of communism and the fall of the Soviet Union

In this time of national uncertainty, it has never been more important for Americans to understand what has shaped our national destiny. This provocative book will enlighten anyone looking for clarity about our past and inspiration for our future.

interesting but definitely not impartial

Good historical perspective and much research but Schweikart lets his biases overshadow at times

Disappointing

I though this was going to be a serious history book. Instead it is just a typical right wing rant that you can hear any day on trash radio. I WANT MY AUDIBLE CREDIT BACK !!

Totally Misleading Book Title

I have no idea why the author thinks this title is appropriate to the content. I believe the author has good points to tell, but definitely unrelated to why America became America. Yes of course I regretted buying & spent time on this book.

Research Authors

This book wasn???t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Bigoted right-wing extremists would probably latch on to this book, as they generally have no knowledge of history to begin with.

Would you ever listen to anything by Larry Schweikart again?

I would never listen to anything else from Larry Schweikart, for knowledge or entertainment, because his work contains neither.

What does Peter Berkrot bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Peter Berkrot should not be penalized because of the content. He was a good performer.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Seven Events That Made America America?

He markets to racists and non-informed people. If I were the editor and I wanted to make money above morality and reality - I'd leave all the scenes in. But, if I were me, as I am, I would not have published it at all. He is not a historian; he is a sincerely biased human being calling himself a historian.

Any additional comments?

Stop. Before you buy this book, be sure it is the one for you. Read other reviews and read up on the author - and then make your decision. I wish I would have.

If you believe that the ???Boston Tea Party??? was about the government telling the citizens of the colonies which tea, they could or could not drink; or that the case of Dred Scott (1857) was the impetus for the Civil War (1861-1865) and that the founders (1776) did not really intend for slavery to be abolished; or that the events that unfolded in New Orleans and the Astrodome was the fault of the citizens???this book would then be for you.

This is not history; this is a fanatic on a mission, he spins history in hopes that readers do not even know who Dred Scott is; let alone the dates of the Civil War. He is a bigot; and no amount of drumming for a band that opened for Steppenwolf, will change that (I cannot for the life of me understand why he continually uses this as a selling point).

This author has written other books (I now know - after the shock) such as 48 Liberal Lies About American History (That You Probably Learned in School). Oh yes, he has a problem with the educational system. He also prides himself on being on ???Fox and Friends???. I really could have used that information.

In short, let me save you the time: This book is about Democrats being idiots while Republicans are smart; he also hopes you will not remember or know, that the Republican and Democratic parties switched platforms. This book and his message is that the government is bad, big business is good and non-white people are the downfall of the American dream.

How absurd???my fear is that there are people that do not know history and they will actually take this book, and incorporate it into their ???fact??? box. Please don???t. Please read unbiased history books and think for yourself.
