Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - When I'm in the mood for nonfiction, Bill Bryson's brand of witty, creative narrative is exactly what I look for, which is why One Summer: America, 1927; is on my list for October. In this book, Bryson takes us on an in-depth journey through a particularly eventful five months in American history: May - September, 1927. Not all newsworthy stories make it to the front page, but Bryson ensures the obscure, peculiar, and downright fascinating details of this summer are not forgotten, seamlessly weaving them into the events of the big headlines - Charles Lindbergh's solo flight, Babe Ruth's home run streak, and Al Capone's rise to power, to name a few. Self-narrated, One Summer is sure to be must-listen for Bryson fans, nonfiction listeners, and anyone who found themselves obsessing over the details in history class. Sam, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, History, 2014

One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive for us in this certain best-seller.

Entertaining Bryson Per Usual

If you could sum up One Summer in three words, what would they be?

Worthy, funny read about an incredible summer. Bryson takes you on the journey and you get to ride along with him as you learn about the host of bizarre, real characters portrayed.

If you read one book

What made the experience of listening to One Summer the most enjoyable?

The backstories, the completeness of everything about 1927 is just crazy. We have learned nothing in the past 100 years and yet so much happened the summer of 1927. Even if you aren't a reader this book is extremely engaging and will be read and re-read again and again.

What did you like best about this story?

It's just amazing what happened the year of 1927. It isn't just one thing - but so many things. People, places, events that all took place this year.

What does Bill Bryson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It's my first Bill Bryson book - there will be more.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This isn't a movie - this is an extended TV series of the highest quality!

Bryson—entertaining as ever!

A delightful book, full of great stories, great characters, and great insights. Bryson's writing is as charming and entertaining as ever.
Unfortunately, Mr. Bryson's narration is notably halting and stilted throughout—not nearly as coherent as his reading of "In a Sunburned Country," or "At Home." I'm hoping his next book will be narrated by Richard Matthews, who did such a wonderful job with "A Short History of Nearly Everything."
In spite of that, the audiobook is fascinating and fun, and the author's less-than-perfect narration shouldn't keep you from enjoying it. It brings back a wonderful slice of American history that will leave you feeling fullfilled and enriched.

Very interesting period in our history

I'm already a fan of Bill Bryson, so I was predisposed to liking this, and it did not disappoint...he's not the worlds best narrator but much better than some of the reviews suggest, IMHO. Listen for the history--fascinating and well-told.

Very worthwhile

Bryson has the uncanny ability to make the mundane fascinating and to weave it with the lives of the famous in an intricate tapestry of history that reads like a novel. The structure begins and ends with aviation and draws the reader into what was truly one most remarkable summer. Don't be deceived. though. because the background and context cover much of the early twentieth century.

Great narration of a slice of history!

It was fascinating to my husband and me of the vast number of very famous people and events that shared space during this amazing summer. We were especially impressed with the biographical sketches that he seamlessly wove into the narrative.

Classic Bryson

A wonderful story that I would know nothing of, if it weren't for the brilliant reporting of Bill Bryson.

Cross-Section of an American Summer

Author Bill Bryson hits another one out of the park.

There is no plot, just a theme: some of the things that happened in the summer of 1927, mostly in the U.S. Throughout the narrative, Bryson discusses interesting little tidbits of American history of the period, returning always to the life and times of significant players such as Charles Lindbergh and Babe Ruth.

Interesting book, supremely well-read by Bryson himself.
