Publisher's summary

A riveting historical narrative of the shocking events surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the follow-up to mega-bestselling author Bill O'Reilly's Killing Lincoln More than a million listeners have thrilled to Bill O'Reilly's Killing Lincoln, the can't-stop-listening work of nonfiction about the shocking assassination that changed the course of American history. Now the anchor of The O'Reilly Factor recounts in gripping detail the brutal murder of John Fitzgerald Kennedy—and how a sequence of gunshots on a Dallas afternoon not only killed a beloved president but also sent the nation into the cataclysmic division of the Vietnam War and its culture-changing aftermath.

In January 1961, as the Cold War escalates, John F. Kennedy struggles to contain the growth of Communism while he learns the hardships, solitude, and temptations of what it means to be president of the United States. Along the way he acquires a number of formidable enemies, among them Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and Alan Dulles, director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In addition, powerful elements of organized crime have begun to talk about targeting the president and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy. In the midst of a 1963 campaign trip to Texas, Kennedy is gunned down by an erratic young drifter named Lee Harvey Oswald. The former Marine Corps sharpshooter escapes the scene, only to be caught and shot dead while in police custody. The events leading up to the most notorious crime of the 20th century are almost as shocking as the assassination itself. Killing Kennedy chronicles both the heroism and deceit of Camelot, bringing history to life in ways that will profoundly move the listener. This may well be the most talked about book of the year.

He took me there.

I am 25, never understood why it was such an emotional subject for people to talk about. This book took me into the life of the Kennedys and I felt as if I was sharing the memories with them. It made the assissination all that more impactful even though it's history and I was expecting it. Excellent book. Outstanding job all around.

Well worth a listen,, despite the well known story

I was 20 when JFK was assassinated. I was in a college class, when someone opened the door and announced the shooting. we all exited the building, an headed for the TV rooms in dorms. As I was moving away, I suddenly thought to turn and look at the flag above the building. It has been lowered to half mast. It was a moment I'll never forget.

O'Reiily and Dugard did a very good job of summarizing JFK' military and political career; including excellent details of his greatest challenges: PT-109; The Bay of Pigs disaster; the Cuban Missile Crisis, the early years of the Viet Nam wat, and the Civil Rights movement. they also reveal much about his womanizing, and relationships with Sinatra and Monroe.

But it's their sensitive and detailed description of the assassination, told with moving descriptions of Jackie's reactions throughout and after the shooting, that moved me to tears.

This book is well with listening to, no matter how much you've seen and heard about this American tragedy, or what opinions you may have had of the political and private lives of this iconic American family.

I've read many JFK books and documentaries and this was the best. O reilly does a great job contrasting jfk and Oswald and explaining in great detail the events that led to that tragic day in Dallas

I Was Hoping for Something More

Well written and beautifully narrated, but I was hoping for something more inciteful. New evidence. New something.

Revealing, Riveting, Required Reading (Listening)

So much has been written about the Kennedy mystique. So many who lived through this period of time have been hungry to know more about the truth behind the man and his ultimate end. Bill O’Reilly has done a great job to give us a more complete look at the man who gave us a brief glimpse of Camelot.
