For his entire existence, the John J. Harvey had been serving the men and women of the New York City harbor area. As a fireboat, it was his job to provide support to firefighters on shore and to boats in trouble on the water.
Harvey fought fires for more than 60 years, but at last it was time to retire. For several years he served as a reminder of the proud past of New York City firefighters. It seemed like Harvey's rescuing days were done, until a late-summer morning in September....
