Publisher's Summary

"We were as brothers," William Tecumseh Sherman said, describing his relationship with Ulysses S. Grant. They were incontestably two of the most important figures in the Civil War, but until now there has been no book about their victorious partnership and the deep friendship that made it possible.

Heeding the call to save the Union, each struggled past political hurdles to join the war effort. Taking each other's measure at the Battle of Shiloh, they began their unique collaboration. Often together under fire on the war's great battlefields, they shared the demands of family life, the heartache of loss, and supported each other in the face of mudslinging by the press and politicians. Their growing mutual admiration and trust set the stage for the crucial final year of the war and the peace that would follow.

Moving and elegantly written, Grant and Sherman is a fascinating portrait of two men whose friendship, forged on the battlefield, would win the Civil War.

The gray and the blue: listen to more about the American Civil War.

What the Critics Say

"A solid book." (Publishers Weekly)
"Flood's overarching theme of Grant and Sherman's friendship, born in fire, is...a worthy contribution to Civil War literature." (Kirkus Reviews)

    "Superb History"

This book is clearly written and incisive with lots of great historical details. Flood really brings out the friendship between Sherman and Grant. He is also a surprisingly great narrator. I highly recommend this book.

This is a well-paced book for those interested in the broader details of the Civil War and relationships between people who shaped events. The narration is well-done and engaging.

    "Great book! Great listen!"

Awesome! A must read for history buffs. It's just a great, true story! My only hesitation is that they abridged the whole battle of Chattanooga/Lookout Mountain. Flood has written a book with excellent research and great story telling! I'm looking forward to getting his other books.

    "Captivating and engaging!"

The book is best listened to at a pace slightly faster than normal. The author speaks clearly, portraying an excellent image of the two wonderful leaders! The visuals are graphic and the history sound! Highly recommended.

    "Excellent fast read (listen)."

A must read for any fan of the Civil War or military history. While I cannot verify the facts or opinions presented, what was painted so very well was a story of two men, cast aside and then later fought just to get back into the army, finding in themselves one of the more effective military alliances in history.

"Author should not have read this audiobook"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Enjoyed the information & perspective of Grant & Sherman's relationship. Offputting was the narration by the author who doesn't have the voice or acting ability to make the story compelling.

What did you like best about this story?

The tidbits of information that played up the close relationship between Grant & Sherman.

What three words best describe Charles Bracelen Flood’s voice?

    Not audio quality

Do you think Grant and Sherman needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Maybe a book on the impact their strategies have had on military studies since.
