Publisher's summary

The Dialogues of Plato (427-347 B.C.) rank with the writings of Aristotle as the most important and influential philosophical works in Western thought. In them Plato cast his teacher Socrates as the central disputant in colloquies that brilliantly probe a vast spectrum of philosophical ideas and issues. None are more exciting and revelatory than the four dialogues - Euthyphro, Apology, Crito and Phaedo - on themes evoked by the trial and death of Socrates, accused by his enemies and detractors of crimes against the state, among them impiety and corruption of the young. In Euthyphro, Socrates explores the concepts and aims of piety and religion; in Apology, he courageously defends the integrity of his teachings; in Crito, he demonstrates his respect for the law in his refusal to flee his death sentence; and in Phaedo embraces death and discusses the immortality of the soul.

Not Complete Dialogues

My Plato's Dialogues is 1500 pages. The intro on the audio says that this is only 150 pages. Perhaps it's "unabridged" but it is also "selected" and the summary should say so.

Sad face!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I liked the performance, and the dialogues. The dialogues did not start at the beginning of the chapter segments, so you cannot just skip to the particulars you wanted to hear; this was very disappointing! Change the recording format and you have a success.

Next to Moses, the most important man in history

Would you listen to Dialogues of Plato again? Why?

Yes, and i bought the book for future reference. It is hard to imagine how western thought would have progressed without this influence of this man, his teacher Socrates, and his pupil, Aristotle and his pupil, Alexander the Great. This man, next to Moses and Christ changed the entire world's thought processes. Amazing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dialogues of Plato?

The analysis of Socrates duty to the state. Magnificent.

What about Pat Bottino’s performance did you like?

This is a difficult work if it is not translated properly, and this was translated in such a way that everyone can understand and follow.

If you could give Dialogues of Plato a new subtitle, what would it be?

Understanding right and wrong, good and bad.

Any additional comments?

This should be mandatory reading for every person on the globe.

Chapters cut dialogues

Chapters cut dialogues in random pieces. This makes the book almost useless unless you listen from beginning to end.

Old

Every turn of chapter starts back a little bit as if to refresh the listener who has had to dig out the next cassette. There's a lot of other things that date the piece. There's a little bit of audible breathing in the back ground. It's not annoying but it's there. Overall still good.

Essential Read

The collection of dialogues accounting for the trial and death of Socrates, along with the Republic and The Laws are essential reading when understanding one of Athen's greatest political authors: Plato.

Plato’s clear words are read in a clear calm balanced and unhurried voice. This audiobook is a priceless gem.

Amazing

I really like to discover how philosophy first started. Many of Platos views can be seen in modern time movies and books. This is a story that follows Socrates before he has to take poison.

No titles, random track breaks

impossible to find a dialog. no table of contents or chapter headings, dialogs end in the middle of a track. also, Plato's arguments are mostly stupid, and always life-denying.
