Editorial reviews

Few events in American history are as shrouded in mystery and controversy as the assassination of President Kennedy. James DiEugenio's peerless work transcends conspiracy theory labels by providing an impeccably researched and skillfully written analysis of this watershed event. Like Jim Garrison, DiEugenio displays an unrelenting commitment to uncovering the truth, and leaves no stone unturned in his pursuit of it.

Paul Neal Roher's distinguished, astute performance underscores the gravity of the subject at hand, and his dynamic range - showcased by his effortless shifts into Kennedy's Boston accent - makes for an addictive and enthralling listen.

Publisher's summary

If you thought you already knew everything there was to know about the Kennedy assassination, think again.

If you enjoyed the chilling experience of In Cold Blood and were at the edge of your seat while watching Oliver Stone’s JFK, you’ll love this investigative look into all the facets of one of the top conspiracies of the 20th century and beyond. DiEugenio, who has spent decades researching the Kennedy assassination, takes both an analytical and conversational approach to his fascinating exploration of the pivotal historical events and scandals surrounding that day.

Twenty years after the first edition of Destiny Betrayed, DiEugenio is back with his ever-expanding investigation into the life and death of JFK. But this is no simple reissue. It is a greatly revised and expanded version of the original book, including updates on all the topics it introduced back in 1992. DiEugenio has used the declassification process of the Assassination Records Review Board (ARRB) to obtain the most current information on topics like the Garrison investigation and Clay Shaw; the newly exposed fallacies of the Warren Commission; U.S.-Cuban policy from 1957 to 1963; Kennedy's withdrawal plan from Vietnam; Kennedy's challenge to the Cold War consensus in 1961, and where those ideas originated; the ARRB medical inquiry demonstrating conspiracy and cover up; and the problems with the investigation of the Kennedy case. DiEugenio’s primary focus is on the Garrison inquiry, the New Orleans aspects of the Kennedy murder investigation, and the revelatory new information that bolsters Garrison’s case and has been withheld from the public.

All of this and more is contained in the narrative of this complex crime, with twin focuses on the victim, John F. Kennedy, and the investigator, Jim Garrison.

Surreal masterpiece

This book is a 5 star audio masterpiece - the narration is a feature, not a bug people. A new, incompetent voice for every character! A work of mad genius

Awful history, entertaining narration.

People complaining about the narration, which is over the top to say the least, are looking past the real problem: almost everything in this book has been discredited by other authors and DiEugenio does nothing to directly engage with their evidence and/or arguments. He cites few sources for his wild claims, jumping from one 'shocking fact' to another without ever letting us know how this information came to light. If you take him for his word, it's fascinating. If you start to dig deeper, it's just fiction. I was hoping for a real look at the evidence, but just got another assassination fluff piece. Read Bugliosi, then read Posner (or the other way around) and then read this.

Very thought provoking !

The books content was exceptional. Mountains of research and previously unknown information revealed.
But, the narrative style was not to my taste. The narrator was very good but, the voice impersonating should have been left out.
I highly recommend this book for it’s informative content.

excellent

this was one of the best Kennedy assassination books I've ever read. Very compelling filled with relevant and pertinent information. Did not go off in 2 areas of speculation but kept to the facts. Illuminated me on a lot of these goings-on in Cuba before the assassinations. The only issue I found is that the chapter seem to skip every once in awhile and I lost my place when the narrator was talkin. Maybe a technical glitch. Other than that will work the time my first audiobook.

The Truth revealed!!

Finally, the truth brought to light! Great research done by Mr. Dieugenio to expose the Government for the frauds they were/are, & what a great American Mr. Jim Garrison was.

Excellent research in the book "Destiny Betrayed."

Would you listen to Destiny Betrayed, Second Edition again? Why?

Yes. It offers research material to aide anyone who wishes to check for facts. It is this type of information that if one wishes to study the criminal behavior in the past century by Govt. officials can review.

What did you like best about this story?

How it adds credence to other authors who are gaining a truer perspective of Wall St. Bankers and their intent of installing a fascist govt. in America.

What about Paul Neal Rohrer’s performance did you like?

His factual historical perspective and the massive research he offers to those who can see it's importance in understanding the facts.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Finally we the evidence to reopen the case.

Any additional comments?

I believe we are at a point where we can prove a conspiracy in JFK's death. Also, the same people of nefarious intent who Gen. Smedley Butler accused in a coup attempt in 1933 and their plans to install a fascist state may have been denied once exposed are still plotting to destroy our republic. Serious researchers can now put the pieces together and explain all aspects of the scandals we've witnessed the past seventy years.

I liked how the story was played out and how it lined up with the Garrison case.

The impersonations!!!!!!

I enjoy Jim DiEugenio’s work and having read this book I went into listening to the audiobook with some excitement... the reading is pretty good until you hit the impersonations of JFK, Johnson, Nixon and others. Holy moly! In my opinion the impersonations are just not in tune with the character of the text.

Anyhow, Destiny Betrayed is an important book and I would recommend reading it. If you don’t have time for that, go ahead and listen but prepare yourself for a horrendous Kennedy imitation to appear here and there.

No conspiracy theorizing - just critique a plenty.

A smart and clean amalgamation of facts and circumstances brought to light by dogged buffs and researchers since the days of the creation of the WCR. The author presents his material in such coherent and contextualizing manner that certainly some will no doubt be provoked into reflexively crying 'Conspiracy theory!' for any number of perfectly understandable reasons.

I for one did not come across much theorizing in this book. Instead, I was fluently entertained by a disturbing narrative of how easily pearls of great price can be overlooked or thrown back to sea by those charged with finding them and stringing them together.
