Editorial reviews

Sam Watkins' lively account of being a soldier in the Confederate Army was first published in 1881 as a series of columns in his hometown newspaper in Columbia, Tennessee, and persists to this day as one of the most widely beloved accounts of a soldier's experience of the Civil War. Watkins has a keen wit and observation - as well as knack for storytelling - reminiscent of Mark Twain. Dan Calhoun's performance has a wonderfully anachronistic character, which allows the listener to feel as if it is indeed Watkins who is recounting the remarkable chronicles found in Company Aytch.

Publisher's summary

This book is considered to be the best account of the Civil War ever written from the Confederate point of view. It is also the one most frequently cited by historians of the Western campaigns. Sam Watkins, a high private in the Army of Tennessee, brings a vividness and detail to his story unmatched in the genre.

Couldn't finish it

The reader is unsuited to the text, not only because of his New England nasal twang, but because of a curiously bland, impersonal, mechanical sing-song style that suggests boredom or lack of interest. I tried but could not make myself finish this book, a rarity for me and an indicator of how unpleasant the experience was. The book, of course, is worth reading for its merit - but I would strongly advise anyone considering buying this audio version to sample it first. Some people may like the style but in my experience it is the worst I have come across in literally hundreds of books and dozens of readers.

Company Aytch

While I am sure this is an interesting book, the narrator reads with a dull monotone. I have heard portions of the book read during the PBS Series "The Civil War" and was looking forward to hearing the entire book. However, after the first almost painful 15 minutes, I gave up and have purchased the print version.
I am disappointed with this narrator. I have truly enjoyed so many other audio books from Audible. I want to warn others to not waste their credit on this version.

Good story, terrible narration.

What would have made Company Aytch better?

A better narrator

Any additional comments?

That's probably the worst narration I've ever heard, but a great story.
