Story
When we think about the future of war, the military and Washington and most everyone gets it backwards. We think in terms of buying single military systems, such as fighter jets or aircraft carriers. And when we think about modernizing those systems, we think about buying better versions of the same things. But what really matters is not the single system but "the battle network"—the collection of sensors and shooters that enables a military to find an enemy system, target it, and attack it.

Story
The revised and updated edition of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's modern classic about the psychology of combat, hailed by the Washington Post as "an illuminating account of how soldiers learn to kill and how they live with the experiences of having killed". In World War II, only 15 to 20 percent of combat infantry were willing to fire their rifles. In Korea, about 50 percent. In Vietnam, the figure rose to more than 90 percent. The good news is that most soldiers are loath to kill.

The harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi. 13 Hours presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism.

The army does not want you to listen to this book. It does not want to advertise its detention system that coddles enemy fighters while putting American soldiers at risk. It does not want to reveal the new lawyered-up Pentagon war ethic that prosecutes US soldiers and marines while setting free spies who kill Americans. This very system ambushed Captain Roger Hill and his men.

In November 1965, some 450 men of the First Battalion, Seventh Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion was chopped to pieces. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constituted one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War. How these men persevered makes a vivid portrait of war at its most inspiring and devastating.

By January 1968, despite an influx of half a million American troops, the fighting in Vietnam seemed to be at a stalemate. Yet General William Westmoreland, commander of American forces, announced a new phase of the war in which "the end begins to come into view". The North Vietnamese had different ideas. In mid-1967, the leadership in Hanoi had started planning an offensive intended to win the war in a single stroke.

A classic work of military strategy, On War sets forth the theories and tactics of Carl von Clausewitz, a distinguished Prussian general who was notable for his roles in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The book covers a broad range of topics, including weapons, terrain, troops, and leadership, as well as the importance of defense over offence, the balance of power, and the subordination of war to politics. Praised for its timeless insights, Clausewitz’s treatise is often compared to the work of Machiavelli and Sun Tzu, and remains relevant to military leaders.

Story
We March at Midnight is award-winning author Ray McPadden’s chronicle of his experience as a highly decorated Ranger officer leading some of the most dangerous missions during the height of the Iraq and Afghan wars. In 2005, Ray joined the army in search of what he calls “the moment” - a chance to prove to himself and his brothers in arms that he is a true leader. His job is to establish the first outpost in the Korengal, Afghanistan’s deadliest valley, and his decisions and mistakes will have a permanent impact on the men he commands.

Story
At 6:00 a.m. on the morning of October 3, 2009, Combat Outpost Keating was viciously attacked by Taliban insurgents. The 53 U.S. troops, having been stationed at the bottom of three steep mountains, were severely outmanned by nearly 400 Taliban fighters. Though the Americans ultimately prevailed, their casualties made it one of the war's deadliest battles for U.S. forces. And after more than three years in that dangerous and vulnerable valley a mere 14 miles from the Pakistan border, the U.S. abandoned and bombed the camp.

Publisher's summary
This is the story of a small group of soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division's fabled 502nd Infantry Regiment - a unit known as the Black Heart Brigade. Deployed in late 2005 to Iraq's so-called Triangle of Death, a veritable meat grinder just south of Baghdad, the Black Hearts found themselves in arguably the country's most dangerous location at its most dangerous time. Hit by near-daily mortars, gunfire, and roadside bomb attacks, suffering from a particularly heavy death toll, and enduring a chronic breakdown in leadership, members of one Black Heart platoon - 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion - descended, over their year-long tour of duty, into a tailspin of poor discipline, substance abuse, and brutality.
Four 1st Platoon soldiers would perpetrate one of the most heinous war crimes U.S. forces have committed during the Iraq War - the rape of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the cold-blooded execution of her and her family. Three other 1st Platoon soldiers would be overrun at a remote outpost - one killed immediately and two taken from the scene, their mutilated corpses found days later booby-trapped with explosives.
Black Hearts is an unflinching account of the epic, tragic deployment of 1st Platoon. Drawing on hundreds of hours of in-depth interviews with Black Heart soldiers and first-hand reporting from the Triangle of Death, Black Hearts is a timeless story about men in combat and the fragility of character in the savage crucible of warfare. But it is also a timely warning of new dangers emerging in the way American soldiers are led on the battlefields of the 21st century.

Story
On the eve of September 11, 2001, New York City's famous National Guard regiment, the fighting 69th Infantry, was not fit for duty. Most of its soldiers were immigrant kids with no prior military experience, and their equipment was derelict. The thought of deploying such a unit was laughable. Sean Flynn, himself a member of the 69th, memorably chronicles the transformation of this motley band of amateur soldiers into a battle-hardened troop at work in one of the most lethal quarters of Baghdad.

Like the men whose epic stories Jon Krakauer has told in his previous bestsellers, Pat Tillman was an irrepressible individualist and iconoclast. In May 2002, Tillman walked away from his $3.6 million NFL contract to enlist in the United States Army. He was deeply troubled by 9/11, and he felt a strong moral obligation to join the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Two years later, he died on a desolate hillside in southeastern Afghanistan.

Sadness
In a word, this piece of history deeply saddens my heart. It angers me the Green took his own life. However, I welcome the idea that God will punish him for his actions and in that I find content. This is an incredible story and solidified how messed up the Army is and the type of leadership it fosters.
As a Marine, I know we are also not exempt from such horrible acts, but I can’t help but think of how many tools we are given and the standard we hold ourselves to lessons the chances of this sort of event from occurring.
In the end, the horrible and tragic event of this book rests on the shoulders of the four weak men who do not deserve any title as a Warrior or Soldier. With that said, the Bn, and Co leadership failed these men by allowing the environment to fall into decent with toxic and an intolerant environment.
I find two other things very disgusting besides the focus of this book. One, I cannot believe the Army Promoted the Bn CO to Colonel. This man should have been fired and forced to retire. He is garbage and by no means a leader! The second, is the fact the jury did not give him the death penalty.
My conclusion is not based on emotion. All four should have been executed for their actions. They stole and destroyed the lives of more than just four people that day. Green got off easy. His suicide shows how weak he really was. I hope to see him in hell!
Short of that, this book is well written and narrated. Often times, the writing took me back to my 2003 and 2004 deployments to Iraq. To the author, thank you for telling throw story. Thank you for showing the toxic environment created by very shitty men and what they call leadership. There were very good leaders discussed in this book who did the best they could with what they were allowed to do, and the tools given. Col Kunk and SgtMaj Edwards were also villains in this story.

lengthy recap, no stated lessons learned
Would like to see a follow on that analyzes leadership mistakes and provides effective solutions. The reader is left to think most of it over, and it is frustrating to see the lack of ownership up and down. Would like more perspectives from higher ups on the inside of the story and those on the outside that could provide examples of what they did differently to solve certain problems.

oof
That is a heavy read/listen. The author does an amazing job putting you there with the Soldiers and hits really hard. The book gives some amazing insights on good and bad leadership, the human mind, and the traumatic realities of war.

Loved the book, hate that it had to be written
The narrator was great, he did some minor accents for different people but it wasn't distracting. A truly great book about a truly horrendous topic. A must read for anyone inside or outside the military.

Graphic and Tragic
heard about this from a friend and had to dive deeper into what created this tragic event.
narration was great and the subject matter is quite graphic.
a deep, dark dive into the decent of soldiers and what can happen.

Real life story of combat soldiers
An awesome story of the real life stress of our fighting forces and the consequences of poor planning and leadership by our politicians and the failings of the chain of command. One of the titles on the Commandant of the Marine Corps reading list.
Very well written and performed.

Horrible Story, but an Excellent Listen
I'm not prior military, so I have a lot of questions for my current and former military friends. There's a lot I can empathize with and a lot I can't. The one thing that's crystal clear is that bad leaders do more damage and ruin more lives than a bullet.
