Publisher's summary

Easy Company, 506th Airborne Division, U.S. Army, was as good a rifle company as any in the world. From their rigorous training in Georgia in 1942 to D-Day and victory, Ambrose tells the story of this remarkable company, which kept getting the tough assignments. Easy Company was responsible for everything from parachuting into France early D-Day morning to the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden.

Band of Brothers is the account of the men of this remarkable unit who fought, went hungry, froze, and died, a company that took 150 percent casualities and considered the Purple Heart a badge of office. Drawing on hours of interviews with survivors as well as the soldiers' journals and letters, Stephen Ambrose tell the stories - often in the men's own words - of these American hereoes.

An Outstanding Read!

This book was mesmerizing!

I first visited the Normandy landing sites in the late ‘50s while my father was stationed in England with the USAF.

One uncle had been killed during the beach assault (and was buried in Normandy) while two other uncles had been in the Airborne. So, Normandy has always held a particular significance for our family.

In the mid-60s, when my dad was stationed in Germany, I also got to visit the Eagle’s Nest.

And my wife’s family live in Swindon, UK.

I watched the HBO series with my own son before taking my family to England, Normandy, Holland & Germany in 2009 (and more than once since our return.)

With all this prior experience, I was both surprised & delighted that Stephen Ambrose’s book still had so much more to offer - and could be so captivating; I couldn’t stop listening! (In the car while driving, while walking the dog, in the evening while relaxing around the house.)

I'm thankful for the service and what these men had to go through for us. I can't imagine the weight they had on their shoulders.

Simply outstanding!

Absolutely outstanding! Like a lot of other people I bought this book due to the band of Brothers mini series. Which, by the way was outstanding. But as the old saying goes. The movie is never as good as the book.

Always a special experience

Band of Brothers is wonderful. If you are familiar with the work and are selecting this for nostalgia, I recommend “Beyond Band of Brothers” by Dick Winters as an alternative if you have to choose.
