Publisher's summary

Applied Austrian economics doesn't get better than this. Murray N. Rothbard's America's Great Depression is a staple of modern economic literature and crucial for understanding a pivotal event in American and world history.

The Great Depression was not a crisis for capitalism but merely an example of the downturn part of the business cycle, which was generated by government intervention in the economy. Had this book appeared in the 1940s, it might have spared the world much grief. Even so, its appearance in 1963 meant that free-market advocates had their first full-scale treatment of this crucial subject. The damage to the intellectual world inflicted by Keynesian- and socialist-style treatments would be limited from that day forward.

Very well written but Not for the layman

I have no doubt whatsoever that everything within this book is absolutely painstakingly researched, double checked and 100% true. The issue with this book is that it's the financial version of an everyday guy or girl sitting through a lecture on advanced quantum mechanics. Afterward you're just like..............ummm, what??? And you don't have to go much beyond chap 1 to figure that out either. As I said, I'm not knocking this book. It's just not for the everyday Jack or Jill. It's for economists. Exclusively.

Great Information and Data

Storytelling could be better to make all of the lessons stick, but there is a lot of great information here.

The best book I have ever read on the subject

The question “What caused the Great Depression, and why did it last so long?” has been central to economic history, but even a class on the economic history of the US in college couldn’t give me a real answer. This book details, in high resolution, the only logical and satisfying answer to this question.

The best

One of the most important books on economics ever written. Mostly easy to follow but sections will be more difficult for novices. Don’t be afraid to turn the speed down to .9 or .8 to better facilitate comprehension and retention.

So boring!

Don’t listen to this unless you absolutely love economics and/or need to read it for school.

Even Laymen Can Understand This

This is a great book for someone, like me, who does not understand details about economics and the theories behind economics. Granted, listening to a lot of the statistics put forth during this book is more difficult than reading it, but the concepts laid out by the author are crystal clear. This opened my eyes and helped me better understand the disaster that follows when the government meddles in the economy. It was written 50 years ago but it pertains today.

a classic

A classic work on how the initiation of violence caused the great depression and suffocated any recovery. Unfortunately read rather fast for the complexity of the subject matter and the amount of detailed data. If you are not very familiar with economic terms, it might go a bit fast and I would recommend the paper version.
