Publisher's summary

Since the liberal revolution of the '60s and '70s, American history books have been biased toward the negative. They overemphasize America's racism, sexism, and bigotry while downplaying the greatness of her patriots. As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington, more on the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II than on D-day or Iwo Jima, more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin.

This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America's true and proud history. The authors reexamine America's discovery, founding, and development with an appreciation for the principles of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that have made this nation so uniquely successful.

"There are a thousand pleasant surprises and heartening reminders that underneath it all America remains a country of ideas, ideals, and optimism: and no amount of revisionism can take that legacy away." (Humane Studies Review)
"Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen remind us what a few good individuals can do in just a few short centuries....A fluid account of America from the discovery of the continent up to the present day." (Wall Street Journal)

More realistic

Despite what more liberal reviews may offer here, from my perspective, the book reveals a more realistic point of view on our nation's history than any written by liberal or conservative. This is definitely a worth while investment in knowledge.

Interesting Economic Slant

While I found most of the history interesting, towards the end, when areas of US History I am more familiar were discussed, I noticed several inaccuracies. Several facts mentioned during WWII were just wrong. This made me wonder if there were factual errors in the other areas.
At the beginning of the book, I was told by the author that history has usually been written by liberals, and that this book was not one of them. I didn't really understand that until I got further into the book. The author maintains a theme that if government limited it's pre-occupation with addressing social conditions and just let capitalist economic forces dictate social change, America society would be better today.
I'd like to see an updated editation as this book ends with the fall of Iraq. I would like to see how several years of occupation of Iraq since then has affected the author's viewpoint.

A Patriots History of the United States

I am a moderate Democrat and I still loved the book. I like all points of view on any subject and I tell my students to get as many views on a subject as possible. The books gives a very slanted message that big business and all Republicans are good and just and have created our great country in their image and all Democrats are ruining the country. The book justifies all wrongs we have done in our history and if left alone with Republican leadership all will be right. The author gives all credit to the Republicans while blaming the Democrats for all that is wrong with the country. As I listened to the last pages I had to watch the movie W to keep my sense of humor. Listen to the book, most of it was great listening and made you proud to be an American but keep in mind we must face up to the ills of our history.

Conservative, but excellent!

Every history book is biased. I appreciate when an author is up front about their liberalism or conservatism. This is honest. When an author claims that there is no bias, that is dangerous, because that author expects you to take everything they say as factually true; even when there are other sides to an issue. The author writes from his point of view because he believes that his point of view is right (that is what point of view means, after all). He is up front about it, so it does not detract from the book. The book is clear, full of great facts and is a smooth and easy listen. If you listen to it you will enjoy the experience and gain a wealth of knowledge regarding the chronology of the United States.

Chuck

This is a wonderful listen! The authors have done a nice job in presenting history thru story telling. It reminds me of cold winter nights when my Grandfather would meet his fellow farmers at the local general store. They would surrond themselves around a coal burning stove and tell stories late into the eveing. Those stories are rooted in my mind because of they way they were told. You'll find the same when you listen to "A Patriot's History of the United States."

A must read for all American Patriots.

Read through to the end. Ponder the implications that the information provides, and then take the country back!

Great Book even though it skews right

I really enjoy this book. As with all history, I probably need to read a few others to determine how great it was or how biased. Wealth of information and wonderful overview. Very readable
