Publisher's summary

In 1528, a mission set out from Spain to colonize Florida. But the expedition went horribly wrong: Delayed by a hurricane, knocked off course by a colossal error of navigation, and ultimately doomed by a disastrous decision to separate the men from their ships, the mission quickly became a desperate journey of survival.

Of the 300 men who had embarked on the journey, only four survived - three Spaniards and an African slave. This tiny band endured a horrific march through Florida, a harrowing raft passage across the Louisiana coast, and years of enslavement in the American Southwest. They journeyed for almost 10 years in search of the Pacific Ocean that would guide them home, and they were forever changed by their experience. The men lived with a variety of nomadic Indians and learned several indigenous languages. They saw lands, peoples, plants, and animals that no outsider had ever seen before.

In this enthralling tale of four castaways wandering in an unknown land, Andres Resndez brings to life the vast, dynamic world of North America just a few years before European settlers would transform it forever.

Good history lesson

Was good history. At times narration was hard to follow due to inflection & not knowing the translation of what was spoken.
Hard to imagine the harshness that was tolerated.

Sobering but Facinating and Important Book !

This book is sobering for anyone who had any illusions about the first Europeans to arrive in North America, and their motives for settling the new world. However, it is a fascinating adventure and true-story account of the first encounters between the native peoples and those from the so-called civilized world. This is recommended reading for anyone who has a driving curiosity about what it was really like in North America before European settlement.

Good story

Not exactly what I expected, but a great book - well written and well narrated. I enjoyed the first part of the book where it references Cortez - interesting how decisions made in that time completely changed history, and the players we remember as a result.

What actually happened

Did you ever wonder what the plundering of the Americas by the Spanish was really like? This book is a wild ride exposing the horrors and wonders of the Spanish total destruction of the civilizations of America through the eyes of lost explorers. These last 4 men were the first to see the greatness of the final fronteer North America as it was plundered by their countrymen.

Amazing Story

What an amazing story. Gives great insight into the native peoples of the Americas before the major impact of Europeans.

Amazing story

I loved the book, my only critique would be that the narrator's over the top Spanish pronunciations were a bit much for a book geared towards English speakers.

A tale you must know!

Great narration! A tale you must know especially if you live in the gulf region. Shows the tenacity of the Spaniards and how brutal the gulf could be… survival of the fittest!
