This book helps you learn about exercise, fitness, diet, and whole body improvement. It is motivating and interesting. The combination of medical reasoning/logic and real life stories lends credibility to the information contained in it. I have listened to this entire book twice and I am sure I will listen to it many more times. Anytime I start to loose motivation to keep exercising or to start eating "crap" as it is so eloquently described in this book, I replay the book during my commute for the week and I am re-energized to stay on my exercise and diet routine. The narrators for this book are fantastic! I am glad the authors decided to have two narrators making it very easy to know when the text was coming from Chris, the antidotal retired lawyer, or Henry, the medical doctor. The Darwinian references are something you will need to take with the filter by which you view your religious beliefs. Don't pass this book up because of the evolution aspect - the other content is worth every penny the book costs and then some! I look and feel 10 years younger than I did last year.
A friend recommended the book, and I found the "women's" version almost by accident. Pushing 50 and tired of feeling "old," I know I need to make a change, and have tried several over the last couple years. I just couldn't stick with them, because most "programs" advocate activity every other day. For me, one day off became two, then three and soon, "what's the point?" I love the framework offered. It allows tremendous flexibility in WHAT I do, so long as I do it 6 days a week.
The medical facts are presented in English, not med-speak. And the anecdotes are fun! The book is eye opening without being threatening. It is easy to take Chris' admonitions as the recommendations of a trusted friend.
I've even enlisted my husband to grow younger with me. I've only walked and bicycled so far, but I already feel more energetic. Money well spent.
The doctor is good, and his information is very interesting. He could be a little more animated in his narration, but it is science. The other guy is ridiculous and condenscending. He knows nothing about women. Should have gotten somebody a woman could relate to if you wanted color commentary. I kept forwarding past him to the docs parts. He added absolutely zero - nothing to the book.
What an inspiring and motivational book on living your life to it's fullest. Simply written and very entertaining! I enjoyed having two narrators and the humor mixed with science. This book is one you may choose to read over and over again.
My Mother gave me this book. While the material is not new, it is good. It is just what I needed to jump start the next 1/3 of my life. Yes, the theme is Get Up and Move and yes that has been said over and over in hundreds of other books - this one hit home, it put in such a way the importance of exercise I GOT it.I am not an athlete, not even close to being fond of exercise and since listening to the book (and reading it) I have been swimming daily, yoga a couple times a week and water aerobics to boot Works for me. I have purchased 3 copies and given them to my dearest friends.
I have enjoyed this book over and over again. Full of lots of great information and the personal stories are worth the listen.
Great overall simple guide to good health at any age. Gives specific examples. I have recommended it to many friends

First Thoughts: Younger Next Year for Women had a good message (mostly) but it was buried under joining a gym, skiing stories, swimming stories, and insulting terms that made me shut down the book!
Here is the parts that I really liked:
1: Exercise is key to adding years to your life.
2: Eating right makes your body perform better.
3: Knowing your heart rate during exercise will let you know how much you are pushing yourself.
4: Strength training for women is key to battling some women specific issues that come up post menopause.
Nothing earth-shattering but all good things to keep in mind. The rest (and I made 6 hours) was all chatter that was off-putting and buried the information. Overall I was not impressed.
I'll sum it up for you "exercise 60 minutes a day 6 days a week".. There, now you don't need to waste your time on this book.
The good news is you can skip every other chapter if you still want to read it to satisfy your own curiosity. The doctors "side kick" takes up half of the book has nothing to say, just his old stories.... It's like listening to my 97 year old father talk about the good old days on the front patio.
The doctor doesn't have any new advice you didn't learn from your PE/health teacher in 6th grade. It's just the basics .. Like eat a decent diet, don't drink in excess... Don't smoke...& exercise... So if you've been living under a rock all your life and oblivious to the basics everyone has told about basic health, and are possibly mildy retarded ... you could need this book.
I've read dozens of health and nutrition books, this one has got to contain less information then a 3 page health magazine articles.
I really felt almost insulted at the extremes the book went. to "dumb down" it's content. Surely if these guys are going to write a book they have more knowledge then this, or maybe not.
A few friends were reading this book and I thought I would give it a go. HUGE mistake, waste of a credit. Like so many other books these days the author took his format from his preceding book, added a few female issues and 'made bank' on a pathetic sequel--keeping a man as the case study. The bottom line is move, eat balanced meals, take care of yourself and those you love. Ever heard that before? I think Dr. Lodge presents valuable points but his means of delivery is to painful to endure.
