Publisher's summary

A provocative look at how eliminating wheat from our diets can help us lose weight, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse a broad spectrum of health problems—from acne to diabetes to serious digestive disorders.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than 2,000 of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat. How this once-benign grain—now genetically modified almost beyond recognition and found in virtually every course of every meal—has come to have such a profound and deleterious effect on our collective well-being is one of the great untold health stories of our generation.

In Wheat Belly, Dr. Davis exposes the truth about modern-day wheat, deconstructing its historical role in the human diet and the agricultural evolutions that have created a hybrid grain that has a greater impact on blood sugar levels than pure cane sugar and many of the addictive characteristics of a narcotic. He sheds light on wheat’s connection to weight gain as well as to a host of other adverse effects from diabetes to heart disease to immunologic and neurologic disorders like celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and dementia. Finally, to help listeners dependent on wheat products make the move to a wheat-free diet, he presents a clear-cut action plan packed with food and lifestyle tips, meal plans, and recipes.

Informed by decades of clinical research and backed by case studies of men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in their health after waving good-bye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at a familiar food as well as an affirmative life plan for regaining health and losing unwanted pounds.

Very interesting premise - and lots of proof!

I have been suffering from the dreaded "wheat belly," which returned after I "fell off the wagon" on my sugar-free, wheat-free, flour-free, caffeine-free food plan. I can testify to the fact that when I was "wheatless," I easily lost weight (and the belly) despite eating TONS of food (i.e., lean protein, vegetables, vegetables, vegetables, and very complex starches).

When I returned to my "normal" diet (of carbs, carbs, refined carbs & more refined carbs) sure enough, back came all the things I don't want. I can DEFINITELY attest to the addictive and morphine-like effect that sugar, flour, & wheat have on me. Once I start eating these things, I eat them till I pass out or run out.

The info in here makes sense to me from a scientific standpoint, and the doctor's many accounts of patient improvements really impressed me. Even if one is not sure about the effects of wheat on their body, there is nothing that I can see to lose (not eating wheat CAN'T make you sick) and only better health to be gained by following the plan he outlines. Being wheat-free sure worked for me! I am happy to say I am back on my healthy food plan and feel much better!

I must say I was a little tired of all the molecular details, but to a scientist I suppose they would have more meaning. I would have been happy with a simple "wheat has been genetically altered to increase yield and is not the same wheat we were eating in the 1950's when our moms were thin and nobody was going to the gym 6 days a week just trying to keep from getting worse."

Skip us this day our daily bread.

An amazing, and startling, and eye-opening read. I started a new diet that recommended cutting back on wheat because even whole wheat was not in fact very healthy for you. Then I read this book... Now I'm off wheat completely, and hope to stay off it.

O M G I had no idea!

I had NO idea how much things had changed thru the years. Bloated, fat, unhappy and constipated I wandered thru life wondering what happened to me that I couldnt lose weight, I couldnt focus, I couldnt use the toilet like everyone else. Why do I have to have MS, sjoghrens, visual issues, and tummy aches. My naturopath gave me a diet and a list of books to read. After completely removing ALL grains from my diet my weight dropped easily and quickly without exercise and without going hungry. No more starvation, no more tricking myself into thinking I was doing good for myself by eating low fat, high fiber, and low sugar.

Thank you for this book! I thought I was pretty enlightened about the food I ate. I was sooo wrong! from lot fed beef, to grains that hike your blood sugar to beans not being good for you. This book opened my eyes yet one more step towards being truly conscious about what I stuff in my gob.

I can relate to this subject matter.

If you could sum up Wheat Belly in three words, what would they be?

A nutritionist has discussed the subject of wheat and how it effects my health. I so appreciated this subject and the discussion on the subject of wheat. My nutritionist made the claims that Wheat is not our grandmothers flour. I remember baking bread with my Grandmother on the farm and this book hit home, especially with struggling of belly fat and diabetes. Dr. Davis filled in all the reasons for this issue in my life.

Would you be willing to try another one of Tom Weiner’s performances?

No, he turned me off with his accentuation and felt like a force march. The book needed a more sympathetic voice. Not so much in your face and lecturing voice.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The Wheat Belly book, gave me an understanding of the subject and motivated me to start removing wheat once again from my diet. Good Job Dr. Davis
