Publisher's summary

A provocative look at how eliminating wheat from our diets can help us lose weight, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse a broad spectrum of health problems—from acne to diabetes to serious digestive disorders.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than 2,000 of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat. How this once-benign grain—now genetically modified almost beyond recognition and found in virtually every course of every meal—has come to have such a profound and deleterious effect on our collective well-being is one of the great untold health stories of our generation.

In Wheat Belly, Dr. Davis exposes the truth about modern-day wheat, deconstructing its historical role in the human diet and the agricultural evolutions that have created a hybrid grain that has a greater impact on blood sugar levels than pure cane sugar and many of the addictive characteristics of a narcotic. He sheds light on wheat’s connection to weight gain as well as to a host of other adverse effects from diabetes to heart disease to immunologic and neurologic disorders like celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and dementia. Finally, to help listeners dependent on wheat products make the move to a wheat-free diet, he presents a clear-cut action plan packed with food and lifestyle tips, meal plans, and recipes.

Informed by decades of clinical research and backed by case studies of men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in their health after waving good-bye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at a familiar food as well as an affirmative life plan for regaining health and losing unwanted pounds.

It can change the way you eat

Would you listen to Wheat Belly again? Why?

Eventually. It's really full of content, some of which would be easier to understand in a visual format you could refer back to more easily.

What other book might you compare Wheat Belly to and why?

I don't know about comparisons, but if you are reading this book due to gastric problems, you should read Breaking the Vicious Cycle for more info on healing damage due to celiac and wheat intolerance.

What does Tom Weiner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think the humor probably comes through a bit better in audio format.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Confirmed a lot I'd suspected, learned quite a bit more.

Any additional comments?

He sometimes waits a bit too long to give the supporting evidence for claims. And he throws around "genetically modified" in an incorrect fashion when talking about wheat. GMOs are plants that have had unfamiliar genetic material inserted to change the final offspring. Wheat has not been genetically modified in this fashion, just changed A LOT in the old fashioned breeding. It seems intentionally misleading.

All in all, a good read, but a bit too cavalier in some of its claims.

Plenty of documented evidence for most claims though.

A wheat free manifesto...

Our modern day wheat is genetically modified. It is therefore harmful and causes all kinds of diseas. And by the way all other grains have gluten, so avoid them too. Finally even beans and legumes over a 1/2 cup serving are a no no.

I found the reasoning unconvincing. Beyond some observational results which were of interest, the book - for me - did little else than reinforce my beliefs around processed foods and managing blood sugars. I may even moderate my wheat consumption a little. But to demonize wheat to this extent seems extreme and unjustified by the evidence provided.

I was curious about the book, glad I read it. Would not read it again though.

So far so good

Would you consider the audio edition of Wheat Belly to be better than the print version?

No I think there are some technical chapters where the print version would be better. It was good to have the pdf as well.

What other book might you compare Wheat Belly to and why?

I don't know of any other diet book to compare it with. But it is a life changer so perhaps "Younger Next Year"

Which character – as performed by Tom Weiner – was your favorite?

Not applicable

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Not applicable

Any additional comments?

So far I am trying the diet and not finding it too difficult. The book did advise about some of the withdrawal symptoms which actually happened. But now that I am over that I find that I am eating less and feeling good about not being a slave to wheat.

I started recommending this book before I finished

There is no doubt that you will recognize yourself or loved one who can be helped by reading this book.

While listening to this book, I would pause it to call someone to tell them about this. As Dr. Davis described symptoms cause by wheat, I would envision different people in my life (and myself).

Great book

loved the book, the information makes sense if you do research on the side, he outlined everything and made it easy to comprehend. I will be listening to it a few more times to catch the smaller details but over all great pace and easy to understand.
