Despite the success stories publicized by Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers, and others, 90% of all diets end in failure. How can we fix the way we lose weight so that we make results last?
Weight-loss expert Dr. Yoni Freedhoff has uncovered the flawed thinking that sabotages even the most earnest weight-loss efforts. The majority of dieting or weight-loss programs call for regular sacrifice: Give up an entire food group; fight hunger day and night; undertake exhausting and grueling exercise regiments. These approaches are unrealistic, unhealthy, and make it nearly impossible to maintain results.
Now, at last, there is hope. In The Diet Fix, Dr. Freedhoff offers a tested program for breaking down the negative thought patterns that prevent people from losing weight and keeping it off. Through the course of years of research and patient treatment, he has developed a 10-Day Reset that supports losing weight while maintaining a healthy, enjoyable lifestyle. This reset is designed to eliminate the habits that so often lead to weight gain: Use it to shut down cravings, prevent indulgences from turning into binges, and break up with the scale once and for all. The 10-Day Reset can make any diet more effective, whether it’s low-carb, low-fat, meal replacement, calorie tracking, or anything in between.
Whether used on its own or in conjunction with any other diet, Dr. Freedhoff’s program shows how to replace this toxic dieting mindset with positive beliefs and behaviors. It is time to break the cycle of traumatic dieting. With The Diet Fix, Dr. Freedhoff offers a groundbreaking, useable guide to begin living happily while losing permanently.

"As should be obvious to anyone who's been paying attention, these and many other approaches to weight-loss can work. The real challenge is keeping weight off, and Freedhoff's advice focuses on how to win that battle by formulating a plan you can happily live with for the rest of your life, not just for a few weeks or months." (Runner's World)
"The Diet Fix delivers. This is a wonderful approach to tackling the Diet Demons. It allows people to keep what they like most about food - the taste and indulgences - and to get rid of what they don't like about food - overeating and guilt. It's about balance. Regaining balance in our diet as well as in our lives." (Brian Wansink, PhD, Author of Mindless Eating and Slim by Design)
"Here finally is a book capturing the nuts and bolts of the dieting culture that has gripped North America. With Dr. Freedhoff's presentation of fact supported by years of firsthand experience, a crystal-clear picture of what works, what doesn't and what is myth emerges. The Diet Fix is a service to all." (Tosca Reno, author of the New York Times best-selling The Eat Clean Diet)
Yoni's philosophy of life is clearly articulated in this treatise on all that is wrong with fad diets.
Yoni is articulate, genuine and truly wants to help.
Yoni has a great voice that is easy to listen to and follow.
This book has started me again .Tracking is a key and treating it as info not judgement have helped get me unstuck. Good overview and analysis of what is out there.
Yes. I liked that author had a scientific but compassionate approach to weight loss and weight maintenance. He has a fresh or alternative way of looking at weight loss. Awesome, that he appreciates that people are individuals. I liked that he pointed out that the food industry had a lot in stake.
Geneen Roth -- When Food is Love and Feeding the Hungry Heart. Not scientific but more about mindfulness while eating and being compassionate to yourself to get to your individual weight.
He spoke clearly and I liked that he repeated what he said over and over again. I am curious if the book version is similar. But it helped with remembering his diet approaches.
A lot of moments! 1. People who are happy with their weight are happy with their life. 2. He differentiated binge eaters into two different groups. 3. That losing weight doesn't mean you have to suffer. 4. That he added questions 2 and 3 before you put a piece of "forbidden" food in your mouth.
It would be great if the PDF had markers to go with the 10 Day plan so that the listener could go back and listen without searching for it. I am now planning to re-listen to the book and mark it myself. For that , I did not give 5 stars. For the price of the audio book and not having a companion book available for purchase it is very inconvenient. I listened to the book while walking and I had to accelerate the speed of the narration to 1.5x otherwise the cadence of his voice slowed me down. But otherwise, it was easy to listen to his narrative style and follow along and learn what he is trying to teach the listener.
This physician laid out a practical, realistic approach to weight loss that didn't promise miracles and didn't attempt to promote some gimmick. It is designed to work with any eating plan you decide to adopt so that it can fit into your lifestyle, instead of the other way around. Dr. Freedhoff believes that we aren't meant to fit into boxes. Rather, each of us has a personal best, based on our own circumstances. One takeaway for me was that life must include chocolate. Some days, I might want the whole bar, and that's okay, but on another day, I may be happy with just a bite or two. As for exercise, he believes that we ought to do as much as we can honestly enjoy, and if some days, that's walking up a few flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator, instead of pounding the pavement for an hour, then so be it.
On a side note, Dr. Freedhoff, who narrates this book, has a voice reminiscent of Lieutenant Geordi La Forge, which makes the book even more enjoyable for me.
I have done lots of stupid things to lose weight until so far. I now know why some things work and some others not thanks to this book. This is an important book for people with struggles regarding weight loss.
I loved this book as much (or more) as I love Yoni's Weighty Matters blog. Yoni is the most sensible, Kind and thoughtful person I've ever encountered when it comes to health and weight. He is also an engaging writer and narrator.
What I love most though is that his recommendations are evidence based, easy to follow and flexible. Because of this almost everyone will find this book to be useful, regardless of dietary preferences and requirements.
I highly recommend this book. I use it in conjunction with my fitness pal.
"what a kind and sensible man"
i have been playing along while listening to this. I have almost effortlessly lost 10lb and am feeling chilled. Im particularly impessed with the humanity, he gets it and knows that being mean does no good. I have never appreciated a doctor more.
