Publisher's summary

In his mid-20s, Dave Asprey was a successful Silicon Valley multimillionaire. He also weighed 300 pounds, despite the fact that he was doing what doctors recommended: eating 1,800 calories a day and working out 90 minutes a day, six times a week.

When his excess fat started causing brain fog and food cravings sapped his energy and willpower, Asprey turned to the same hacking techniques that made his fortune to "hack" his own biology, investing more than $300,000 and 15 years to uncover what was hindering his energy, performance, appearance, and happiness. From private brain EEG facilities to remote monasteries in Tibet, through radioactive brain scans, blood chemistry work, nervous system testing, and more, he explored traditional and alternative technologies to reach his physical and mental prime. The result? The Bulletproof Diet, an anti-inflammatory program for hunger-free, rapid weight loss, and peak performance.

The Bulletproof Diet will change what you think you know about weight loss and wellness. You will skip breakfast, stop counting calories, eat a high-fat diet, work out and sleep less, and handle stress with ease. By ditching traditional "diet" thinking, Asprey has maintained a 100-pound weight loss, increased his IQ, and reached a level of health that seemed unattainable. His 40s are truly better than his 20s, and The Bulletproof Diet brings his best hacks to the masses.

8 hour sales pitch

The book has a rather large amount of sales pitch and very little how to. Think of reading a health magazine or news article that says studies show that this food may affect some (but not all) people poorly. The book highlights that food as all of that food causes whatever the ailment. He chops it up as gospel without reference. He constantly talks about his coffee that you buy from him, and the repetition is quite agonizingly boring. I've read and listened to many diet books and I must say, I'm not discrediting the diet, but the book is beyond boring and an 8 hour sales pitch. You could skip to the last half hour and download the accompanying PDF, and have what you really need to know

It is just Paleo for the Pretentious

What disappointed you about The Bulletproof Diet?

Ok...I am just going to say it. CORRELATION IS NOT CAUSATION.

I am going to repeat that: CORRELATION IS NOT CAUSATION.

This guy makes a TON of assumptions not based on real science. The plan is simple. Eat the highest quality, organic vegetables, grass fed beef, MCT Oil, and nothing else.

Of course you will lose weight.

But then he gets really pretentious with this nonsense. Coffee is fine BUT ONLY if you travel to three different countries and hand pick four different beans. Then come home and hand grind them for your coffee machine. Once brewed then add grass fed butter and MCT oil in a blender. It tastes terrible. Especially if you like black coffee and not the BS coffee that people who really don't like coffee drink with milk and sugar.

So, everything you have in your kitchen today is going to kill you in a year if you don't follow this guy's bulletproof plan. Your spices have mold toxins, your fruits are just dessert and your poultry will give you cancer FAST!!!

How does he come about these recommendations? With assumptions. NOT SCIENCE...but assumptions. Here is some of the nonsense he uses to back up his absurd theories:

"Gee, I changed my normal jelly to organic hand pressed jam that I made at home and I feel SO MUCH BETTER!"

"OMG...I stopped eating peanuts and now I FEEL SOO MUCH BETTER."

"I stopped using dry spices and noticed my joints don't have as much pain."

He lists all these crazy medical conditions he once had that magically were cured by putting butter and MCT oil in his coffee. Oh, and with this plan you will go through several hundred dollars in MCT oil each month. Which is fine if you are a millionaire. But those of us who live in the real world will need a more realistic approach.Giant waste of time and money on this one. And it is a TERRIBLE audio book because you don't any of the supplemental hard copy guides and lists. Just need to take notes from a guy who has the most annoying voice in audio books.

Take a pass on this one and simply learn a lifestyle plan for your daily diet that works for you. Not a plan built by a pretentious millionaire who makes his own bacon from hogs that were massaged by angels for 5 years and fed only organic honey and raw virgin blood.

Bulletproof truly is #onlyforsuckers

Has The Bulletproof Diet turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but I probably won't buy an audiobook based off a diet plan. You really need the hard copy.

What didn’t you like about P. J. Ochlan’s performance?

His voice...not a good voice for audiobooks.

Any additional comments?

One more time...Correlation is NOT causation. Don't waste your time on assumptions and pseudo junk science.

Having the physical book may be better than audio

Very interesting. Now I need to buy the book so I can go back to the information I need to remember.

On the fence

I have educated myself a fair bit in the last few years on heath after being diagnosed with celiacs, and a thyroid condition. Still struggling to lose weight, I am continually listening to books about health and weight loss, and an interest in intermittent fasting caught my eye here.
I think the book is not bad. He has some good info, what I would consider to be accurate and current with what we are learning about health lately. No to sugars, no to gluten, yes to certain kinds of fat, lots of proteins and veg. Healthy gut flora and bacteria balance matters 100%. The vitamin supplement list he gives is bang on, mostly its all good stuff.
But I don't like that he has no medical background to speak of, but is giving health advice based on personal experience.
No mention of goitrogens and what veggies those with thyoid issues should never eat.
Is this the new Atkins diet? Lots of fat and protein....I feel like I've been here before.
I guess I dont regret buying the book and think there is good info in here, but by no means a bible to live by. I'd listen to a few others as well, and make your own conclusions.
The constant interruptions with endorsements were annoying, not helpful and the sales push to buy his product also a head shaker. Couple of reminders would have sufficed, and the book easily could have been 2 hours less.

resisted to buy the book for 1.5 month too long

Would you listen to The Bulletproof Diet again? Why?

Absolutely, listening to it whilst driving is not enough, need to take notes also for more intense learning.

What did you like best about this story?

Several aha moments, he put many bits of the newest information into one stop book.

What does P. J. Ochlan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

easy to listen to voice and with very professional conduct.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

He is talking about failing on several occasions, this gives me hope to succeed also

Any additional comments?

Didn't want to buy yet another diet book, read the comments on Amazon, nah didn't need it, didn't need to be sucked in. Boy was I wrong. It has everything I wanted and now am listening (devouring) his pod casts. Okay he is very convincing regarding his products, so what, if they get me the results I so badly want?

You've had the coffee... Now try the diet

I'm pleasantly surprised with the amount of data Dave uses to backup his findings and suggestions - especially when it comes to toxins and inflammation, two areas where my knowledge was shockingly deficient.

Even though I thought I was doing everything right, it turns out there's a lot more to food storage and preparation.

For example, I didn't know that certain cooking methods will damage proteins, and create toxins in the blood.

Fascinating stuff.

I'm a bulletproof coffee fan. Now I'm putting the rest of Dave's suggestions to the test.

The jury's still out, but yesterday (my first fully compliant day on the diet) brought incredible focus and clarity to my mental game.

So far, so good.

I'd recommend the book to anyone interested in learning more about how diet affects mental and physical performance.

Where is the section on the use of high-end drugs?

Any additional comments?

I'm a bit disenchanted about the author's use of Modafinil, testosterone replacement, and thyroid meds. All of these will bring about the results this diet supposedly generates. I'm still researching this but I wish Dave would come clean right away in the book.

Fad Diet

Just another fad diet. Recommends eating more meat and butter and cutting out fruit.

Great Book!

I feel great! I'm down 10 lbs in three weeks and I've been cheating a lot! Now that I have finally finished the book I will follow the 14 day program with no cheating and see what happens.
