Publisher's summary

Why do some of us get sick with greater frequency than others? What makes us more susceptible to illness? Are we doomed to get sick when our coworkers and family members do? Is there a secret to staying healthy?

Joel Fuhrman, M.D., a leading expert and board-certified medical specialist in prevention and reversing disease, offers a comprehensive guide to superior health.

Based on the latest scientific research, Super Immunity shows us how we can become almost totally resistant to colds, influenza, and other infections.

The evidence is overwhelming: we can supercharge our immune system to protect our bodies against disease - everything from the common cold to cancer. Nutritional science has made phenomenal strides and discoveries in recent years, and when this new research is applied it enables us to seize control of our health like never before. Dr. Fuhrman explains this new science, providing everything you need to know to put this knowledge into action in your kitchen and in your life.

What we eat has everything to do with our health, and, unfortunately, too many of us are living with a severely depleted immune function. Our dietary choices are making us sicker, shortening our lives, and costing us billions of dollars in doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescription medications. But Dr. Fuhrman doesn’t believe more medical care is the answer. Rather, he explains the solution is to change the way we eat. The standard American diet is nutrient deficient. We are eating too many highly processed foods, foods with added sweeteners, and animal fats and protein. At the same time, we are not eating enough fruits, beans, seeds, and vegetables, which leaves us lacking in hundreds of the most important immune-building compounds. By changing our diets and combining foods that contain powerful immune-strengthening capabilities, we can prevent most common modern diseases.

Combining the latest data from clinical tests, nutritional research, and results from thousands of patients, Dr. Fuhrman proves that super immunity exists and is well within reach for those who choose it. We all have the ability to live healthier, stronger, and longer than ever before. Isn’t it time you discovered super immunity?

Great Program but Where are the PDFs?

I am 3 weeks into the initial phase of Eat to Live so already at the strictest phase outlined in this book -- so I am staying put nutritionally. I do have a family dinner once a week and allow myself a slight indulgence at that meal -- when I say slight I mean a small serving of fish or low fat dairy or an extra whole grain or vegetable starch, not meat, poultry, full fat dairy or sugary desert.

I have RA and was very interested in the testamonials in this book. The improvement in my overall health has been amazing and I have lost 10 lbs - which considering that I had already been dieting for 5 months, and losing very very slowly, before begining begining ETL is amazing.

I gave this audio book only 4 stars because once again just like with Eat to Live - I had to buy the print book as well in order to get the menus and recipes. I feel it is unfair that audible readers do not get the same PDFs with recipes and menus that come with the audiobook CD version.

Life-saving book (and pdf is here)

The pdf is available above, just under the Publisher's Summary where it says, "Download the accompanying reference guide".

Dr. Fuhrman is a national treasure. I, my husband, and many of our friends and family have had health issues cured by following Dr. Fuhrman's sensible, logical, and scientifically sound recommendations. These issues include depression, psoriasis, allergies, high cholesterol, weight issues, and high blood pressure.

We now eat the way Dr. Fuhrman recommends because it is easy and delicious. We will never stop eating this way because we are not willing to give up our new found health and energy. Good health and vitality are the body's natural state when you give it the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Dr. Fuhrman Rocks!!

Absolutely top notch - I love this book...all of it. And I go over chapter 5 every few days to make sure I didn't miss anything. If anyone needs knowledge on strengthening their immunity to viruses, bacteria, cancer - this is the book to get. I think following this book could be life changing.

Mostly a big campaign for vegetarianism

This is not a bad book about nutrition, it's just not that original. Most of it is a sermon about how vegetarianism or, at least, about how limiting the amount of meat you consume will solve all of your health problems. There are also sermons about why the use of antibiotics is evil and about why multivitamins are useless at best.

I agree with some of Joel Fuhrman's ideas. However, I didn't find this to be the "breakthrough program" that it is advertised to be. The best points are that it comes with a long PDF with good information and recipes, I thought he did a good job of addressing "superfoods", and he did a decent job of addressing supplements.

As to the bad points, there were quite a few. He advises against antibiotics for almost any reason, which I find to be dangerous, especially for children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. Ditto for vaccinations, although he makes a decent case for being cautious about them. He also advises against seeing your doctor except in dire circumstances. In my experience, if I wait for the dire circumstance, I may not be able to get to a doctor. I also found some of the information about vitamins and supplements to be suspect, at best.

It's not a bad choice for someone who needs more encouragement to eat more fruits and vegetables or for someone interested in dietary supplements and "superfoods", but there are better books about nutrition out there that would give you better information. My recommendation is the nutrition audiobook offered by The Great Courses.

As to the narration, I have noticed a lot of horrible reviews about Ned Sparrow's performance. I thought his performance was perfectly adequate. I wouldn't want to hear him read Shakespeare, but for a health and wellness book, he did fine. I listened at a speed of 2x, so maybe that made him sound better.

Overall, for a medium-length book about nutrition, it could have been a lot better, but if you choose to buy it anyway, be sure to download the PDF.

Good Info, Knowledgeable Doctor

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book is worth reading but I think for a larger overview Eat for Life, by the same author is better. It's actually worth reading both.
I expected more detailed information about the process of increasing ones immunity and how long it would take in different scenarios to overcome a weak immune system.
The narrator put me off a bit because he does not read smoothly and some sentences don't make sense because he stumbles and does not put the emphasis in the proper place.
I've read and studied a lot about nutrition and this book is one of the better ones. Its grounded on information from real studies, unlike the bloodtype diet book that is not based on any science and other books like it (ie, the zone, pritkin, metabolic typing, etc.)

What other book might you compare Super Immunity to and why?

Read

Would you be willing to try another one of Ned Sparrow???s performances?

No. He has a nice voice but stumbles a lot and does not read smoothly.
What were they thinking when they let this book be published with this idiot reading.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Job Opening: We're looking for a narrator that can read.

Any additional comments?

It's still tolerable to listen to even if some of the sentences don't make proper sense and even though some words are very akwardly pronounced.

Excellent, but contains few fake Big Pharma facts

Overall is an excellent book. However, the author quotes a number of fake Big Pharma sponsored studies. For example, the author says that vitamin C, echinacea, drinking plenty of fluids, saline solutions, and steam inhalation proved ineffective by "studies". Who's studies? Rockefeller and Bill Gates sponsored studies?!? This is an obviously false information. Another example - the author quotes studies that linked IGF-1, estrogen, testosterone to cancer. Again, who sponsored those studies?! Same entities that sponsor "vaxxines not linked to cancer at all" studies?!? Then the author says that excess vitamin A (retinol) linked to birth defects - that's another fake study! Vitamin A contributes to bone loss - that only happens when vitamin D levels are disproportionately low while vitamin A is high. Our body converts Betacarotin to vitamin A - yes, but in so tiny amounts that it doesn't even count! ... Looks like doctor Joel Fuhrman is in the mid-way of his research path. But there is still much more wisdom and good advice in this book, too long to quote. One good example is that the author debunked the great Folic Acid Hoax. The Death Authorities (I can't call them health authorities, sorry!) tell pregnant women to take folic acid which results in cancer for the mother and asthma, respiratory illness, cardiac birth defect for the baby. Do not confuse Folic Acid (synthetic) and Folate (food source).

Great book and information

Finally a book that provides an easy explanation and easy to follow guidelines with recipes. Follow this book with Brian food by Dr. Neal Bernard and then Whole by Collin Campbell Phd. Truly life changing, I cannot thank you enough.

Narrator's read VERY AWKWARD

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This book is AMAZING however the narrator had pauses in the wrong places throughout. it was horrible to listen to and I actually then purchased the same title in book form. Seemed the author was unsure of the words, pronunciation, meanings. Very uncomfortable to listen to.

What did you like best about this story?

Content excellent - great inspiration to keep your nutrition clean. THE POWER OF NUTRITION is wonderfully explained.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

mispronunciations, pauses in wrong places, horrible listen to a great book.

Was Super Immunity worth the listening time?

It would be with a good narrator - otherwise I recommend buying the actual book.
