The first half of the book is an overview of the state of the science regarding Low Carb dieting now and historically. Having read Gary Taubes books, I am used to his cautious, neutral language regarding the subject. Bowden, however, has very strong opinions and is not at all restrained in his discussions. I enjoyed the lively, colorful way Bowden has of expressing himself.
The second half of the book consists of Bowden's description and review of 14 low carb diet programs. I found them a bit tedious, but I think they would be invaluable to someone seeking a detailed, expert comparison of the nuances of the programs.
I enjoyed Patrick Lawlor's narration as well, it enhanced the lively way Bowden writes.
Two great passions - dogs and books! Sci-fi/fantasy novels are my go-to favorites, but I love good writing across all genres.
I love to read almost anything except diet books. However, 2 years ago having developed microscopic colitis and some big-time middle age spread, I picked up Wheat Belly on sale on Audible and that started me on changing my diet to that point that I have now lost 45 lbs and cured my colitis when none of the expensive drugs did! I got some major help from another excellent audiobook, The Big Fat Surprise, and really just designed my own plan to eliminate wheat and sugar and reduce overall carbs. Now that I am back in my 6's, I very much want to maintain this weight and my colon health so I thought I'd see if I could get some maintenance advice from Living Low Carb and I was very pleased with what I heard. Jonny Bowden does a great job of reviewing a whole slew of low carb plans, but he also provides some good advice on how to jazz up your meals if you are getting bored and how to adjust the components of your diet/exercise/lifestyle to maintain or restart the losing if you hit a plateau. I've spent my whole life believing in low fat as the way to lose weight and I've also spent my whole adult life fighting to stay slim. I was slow to accept the low carb approach, but it is hard to argue with success! My personal experience leads me to believe that low carb is healthier (at least for the colon) and although it is hard to give up the sugar, getting back a little fat (butter, olive oil, cream, coconut oil - all the things that make food so yummy) has more than made up for that for me. I'm so glad Audible made these books available because I might have missed out on something that truly has changed my life. There are so many approaches to low carb that you can probably find one that will fit your lifestyle and Jonny Bowden reviews almost all of them in this book. Check it out if you are searching or if you just need some tips and tricks to stay motivated on the plan you have.
It's hard for me to review nonfiction books, sometimes, because I feel like I should have a stronger background in research in order to back my positive review. I am not a medical person, but I can say that I found the information in this book to be very compelling. Some of the studies I DO know because I looked them up, but a lot of them, I could not. What I have read, though, does seem to support that a low carb diet is a better choice for most health issues. I thought that the author's willingness to review the different low carb diets was helpful, and I appreciated that he seemed to try to steer clear of trumpeting his own work beyond what is acceptable. Worth a read if you are having autoimmune or any other health problems. Energy dense, though, so you might want to read the book or keep it on hand for reference, as well.

I love this book as a source of information for the different types of low carb eating plans. Really good explained. I will be buying the paperback version for future reference. I just Love it.
Fulfillment and Exuberance
I've listened to this book several times already. It's extremely informative and thorough. He reviews over 20 of the popular low-carb diets on the market today. It was great to get an overview of each of them. I love the frequently asked questions section and the tips for making a low-carb lifestyle work. The author really knows his stuff. I learned so much from this book. The man reading the book did a great job too. His voice is actually similar to the author's. I definitely recommend this book for anyone considering going on a low-carb program.
The 5 Needs in Life
This was one of the best books I have read/heard on low-carb eating. The information was clear and concise, encouragement was given with reason, and the narration was very well done.
I learn best by listening. I do wish the subjets of each chapter would be listed in the "chapter" drop down menu. I like to relisten to chapters as appropriate.
I have a medical background so the tech aspect of the author's presentation is inspirational to me. With that said, the author is so clear about the "mechanics" of those of us who do not do well with high carb diets that anyone will benefit from listening to the terrific amalgamation of the research results on the many varieties of diets.Thank you! The "brain fog" has lifted and my productivity has skyrocketed. Yeah!
This was a great deal of information about low carb in general... Not just one specifically designed diet.
I can honestly say that this book made me re-think what I thought I KNEW. However, it was very redundant . . . maybe intentionally, as there is a great deal of information to process. That said, the presentation was enthusiastic and worth a little repetition.
A little bit too much information, but still very good information.
This is a thought-provoking book and I believe worthy of a listen by most folks considering changing their eating habits. There is a good amount of cited work and data drawn from studies. I felt the book rambled just a bit, and might be a tiny bit too much of a smorgasbord of information. I wish it were maybe just a bit more concise; however, this will be a title that makes it into my "good enough to re-read" category. A good book overall.

A very well thought out and convincing book. It is full of very useful information and is very revealing. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get to the facts about dieting and how the body reacts to carbs and insulin. Very well narrated.
"A great informative listen"
This is not a fad book about crazy diets its a really well presented balanced view of how our understanding of fat, carbohydrates and proteins are changing.
The book has a lot to offer but for me the best thing I took from the book was this.
Controlling weight is about controlling insulin. You learn what affects insulin and what doesn't, surprisingly fat.
Be sure to listen to the reviews of the diets at the end before making a decision on which one to do. He has done all the hard work for you and the summary is excellent.
My best quote from the book comes from the reviews at the end on the discussion of fatty livers.
You don't lose weight to become healthy, you become healthy to lose weight.
The narrator Patrick Lawlor does a fantastic job too. One of the best narrations of any book I have.
