Do you love your Brain or your Bread?

My Mother and her sisters all had Alzheimer's. We thought it was just "those crazy Italians". It was that side of the family that loved the pastas, breads, and pastry. There is also a great deal of depression "on that side of the family". Now I see why. This book has changed my kitchen, my breakfast, lunch and dinner plates. I have dropped 12 pounds so far and feel so much better. Depression and Alzheimer's takes your loved ones away bit by bit, and day by day, there is no cure AFTER you get it, but it is PREVENTABLE. Thank you Dr. Perlmutter for giving us hope and tools to avoid these slow and pervasive thieves called sugar and carbohydrates.

I am glad that I read this

I am impressed that Dr Perlmutter is a medical doctor who appreciates and is erudite in matters of nutrition. He is a member of several nutrition associations. His book is very pithy and offers actionable protocols. The main thrust is about blood sugar levels as a result of eating gluten, sugars and carbs. I am interested in health and nutrition, tolerate gluten fine and am able to eat whatever I want and stay thin. However, after reading this book and out of respect for Dr Perlmutter's body of work and experiences that he relates, I have decided to have as little gluten in my diet as possible. I don't eat much sugar or carbs to begin with however, I am not buying gluten free bread, crackers etc. It has been an easy transition. I've also cut back on fruit and fruit juice dramatically, preferring vegetables. I try to have about 1 serving of fruit each day. I am also adjusting my supplements according to his recommendations. I am going to add turmeric and resveratrol. Dr Perlmutter explains why statins are not good for you, the link between gluten and some brain diseases and why patients on a low-fat diet are at especially high risk. I found this to be a very interesting and compelling read.

I went from 150lb to 116lb quitting carbs/sugar

What made the experience of listening to Grain Brain the most enjoyable?

That I learned so much while I was driving or making dinner. Such and engaging book. He really put the effort in teaching us how to improve our lives by doing small changes that give great results.

What other book might you compare Grain Brain to and why?

Dr. Mercola's No Grain Diet, I wish they wold have the AUDIO version of that book, I go through audiobooks so quickly as oppose to reading the books, I don't have the time.

What does Peter Ganim bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He has a great voice, very professional and you can totally picture a good doctor talking to you. Very kind but also very firm and determined. Great voice actor.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to it while I get ready to go to work, and while driving to work, while cooking dinner. I can't listen to 9 hrs in one day. I probably wouldn't assimilate all the information in one day but by listening to 1 to 2 hrs a day was perfect!

I just finished listening to the AUDIO version of this amazing book that I think EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THIS PLANET should read or listen, regardless if you are ALLERGIC to GLUTEN or not, GLUTEN AFFECTS US ALL, and most importantly, it affects our BRAINS our MOOD and MEMORY, so QUIT BREAD AND SUGAR! you will feel AMAZING!. It would improve your quality of life immensely if you follow his advice on cutting any GLUTEN containing food like bread, pasta, cakes, chips... and instead increase you consumption on healthy fats like COCONUT OIL, OLIVE OIL, RAW BUTTER, NUTS, AVOCADOS...

I have quit bread for a while, not completely but I would only have some indulgences on the weekends like having a hamburger once in a while, but pretty much no bread or pasta or cakes during the week. I am a 34 year old woman, my height is 5'3" and I went from 150lb to 116lb by working out 2hrs every day (P90X, Zumba, spinning) and eating healthy: Lots of fresh organic vegetables (mostly green), protein like turkey and cage free chicken, wild salmon, grass fed beef, 2 cups of fruit a day (no more), 1oz (1 handful) of raw nuts like pecans, pumping seeds, cashews, almonds... and cooking only with COCONUT OIL, I make my own dressing for my daily salad with OLIVE AND COCONUT Oil, apple cider vinegar, nutritional yeast and tons of herbs and TURMERIC and for desert 1 cube of organic NON-GMO dark chocolate.

I've had this way of eating for more than a year but I would cheat to bad on the weekends and I was 121lb and I wanted to loose those last 5 stubborn pounds , now after reading this AMAZING INFORMATIVE book I quit bread for good, I feel much better and I lost the last 5 pounds that I wanted to loose.

Excellent book!

This is one of the best books I read in last few wks, information is practical, true and supported by medical literature. Writer also underlines where the information is taken from and provides solutions, as well proof.

Great information

Totally stopped eating sugar after listening to the first few hours of this book and I was a sugar-holic. I always knew it was was something I needed to do but never had the motivation to go through with it. The information provided in this book will change the way you think about fat and sugar forever. I am now eating a minimal sugar and high fat diet and am loving every moment.
